READING (Grace)
I'm an Indian
I think about common things like this pot
The bubbling water comes from the rain cloud
It represents the sky.
The fire comes from the sun
which warms us all, humans, animals, trees.
The meat stands for the four-legged creatures,
our animal brothers,
who gave of themselves so that we should live.
The steam is living breath
It was water, now it goes up to the sky,
becomes a cloud again.
These things are sacred.
Looking at that pot full of good soup,
I am thinking how, in this simple manner,
The great Spirit takes care of me.
-John Lame Deer

RECIPES
Three Sisters Soup
(Native american inspired, but not authentic). - Rev. Kat
(Corn -strong pole for beans to climb, and squash gathers round the base.)
For vegan option, omit chicken broth.

Canned veggies are OK if that is all you have. Fresh pumpkin or squash makes all the difference. I bake a whole pumpkin (cut in half), blend or mash it, & make extra batch. If you boil squash cubes, you have lots of good stock/broth to start.
Begin with sauted onions and garlic. (grated carrot doesn’t hurt any dish, but I usually keep this simple). Season at the end to you or your partner’s taste- (pepper, sage or curry for variation.)
2 Cups corn, 2 Cups beans and 2 Cups pumpkin or squash thickens the soup consistency.

Zucchini Cream Pie (Eldorado Universalist Church & Zucchini Festival)
Rev. Kat got this recipe from Alice Lee.

Grate the zucchini, extra skin makes it really green! Quick 30 seconds in the microwave by small batches, cool, then squeeze water out by hand.
2 Cups compressed zucchini, 1 egg, 1 Cup evaporated milk
1/4 C brown sugar, 1/4 C white sugar, 1/4 C other sweet if desired.
1/4 tsp salt & 1/4 tsp nutmeg.
Mix in a blender, pour into a prepped/preheated pie crust (5-10 minutes 400 degrees) Sprinkle nutmeg on top to finish. 15 mins @ 400 degrees and 40 minutes at 350 degrees.
