>From another UU congregation: Planning what to* say* and do in case of
emergency. Do we still have a Safety Team? We point out the exit doors
each Sunday, but would the greeters, board members, etc., be ready to jump
in as assistants? Would we have a plan for those with walkers, strollers,
or other mobility issues? Who goes down the secret steps vs. the main doors
at the rear? Can we formulate a script to encourage orderly evacuation,
rather than a stampede?
Just some food for thought.

Last week, I participated in the AUUA Check-in and asked about safety
plans. We had a great discussion - just the tip of the iceberg, as far as
safety is concerned. I said I had some plans drawn up for various
emergencies, and in case of fire, I had words drafted to be spoken from the
pulpit for a Sunday morning (in case our alarms go off). I was asked to
post those words here - which will need to be changed to your own
circumstances, physical layout of the building and type of emergency. But
it's a starting point for discussion. By the way, we are a congregation of
290 or so members, with 60-80 showing up each Sunday.
*Note: *Remember that visitors and congregants may not know which direction
is S/N/W/E when inside your building, and they may not know the names of
your streets outside. Trust me on this one.
Here are the words we have drafted in case of a fire emergency:
1.
You are the Service Leader or Associate at the pulpit
1.
Use the pulpit microphone to state “Please remain seated while we
determine the cause of the alarm.”
2.
Ask Service Associates, Ministers, and/or Board Members to raise
their hands briefly. Tell them to assist people who are using a walker,
wheelchair, transport chair or cane, if the sprinklers have gone off and
exit from the building is required.
3.
To help with evacuation, the Service Leader faces the congregants,
and gives instructions in a firm, calm voice:
“We are going to leave the building. Please remain calm.
“Parents, your children are exiting the building with their teachers.
Please exit the Sanctuary with everyone else here and then make your way to
the sidewalk along Caria Drive, where your children will be waiting for you.
“Greeters, I need you to stand at the double doors at the back of the
Sanctuary and one of you in the middle of the foyer to direct people out.
“People on the same side as the piano, exit through the double doors at the
back of the Sanctuary and proceed out the SOS Family exit to the sidewalk
along Caria Drive. You may also exit the single door on your left into the
Cove.
“People on the same side as our Sound Board, exit through the double doors
at the back of the Sanctuary, or the single door on the west side *[point
to the door]*, and proceed out to the sidewalk along Ceres Drive.
“When you’re outside, please move away from the building.
“If you are near someone who needs help, please offer your help, doing your
best not to block the flow of traffic.”
*In gratitude, *
