Minutes for October 4, 2017  Meeting of the Worship & Music Committee 

 In Attendance:  Adeline Bailey, Peg Clifford, Kat Hawbaker, Randall Kidder, Martha McGovern, Shari Miller 

Next Meeting:  Wednesday, November 1, 2017, 5:00 p.m., Parlor

  1.. Minutes of the September meeting were approved.     
  2.. Correspondence:  Martha - all thank you notes sent. 
  3.. Reports from Specific Task Teams:  
    1.. Aesthetics Team:  will prepare the Sanctuary for the Day of the Dead and November 
    2.. Special Music Team: The quartet will sing on October 22. 
    3.. Worship Associates Team:  
    4.. Piano Task Force:  
    5.. Technology Task Force:   
    6.. Task Force for the Time for All Ages:  
  4.. Re-Usable Folder:  Adeline and Kat led the discussion to identify needed changes:  photographs, Philosophy of Inclusion, information for regular year and summer, addition of Affirmation. 
  5.. Board policy concerning special collections: Shari reported that the issue has been tabled.  Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis. 
  6.. Holiday Decoration
Martha, Jane Tumas-Serna, and the Aesthetics Team sorted through current supplies on September 14, during the Great Holiday Decoration Purge.  

Women's Group has agreed to decorate (starting at 2:00 p.m.) and to meet in the Parlor (starting at 6:00 p.m.) on Wed., Nov. 29 and to dismantle and meet (same times) on Wed., Dec. 27.  

Men's Group has agreed to decorate the outside of the building on December 2.  

  7.. Social Justice and Communication 
    1..  Peg expressed the need to have contact names and numbers for often requested community services.  The Committee agreed that it would be good to provide members of the congregation with a card for quick reference.  - Kat will speak to the Caring Committee. 
    2.. Committee members expressed confusion about the presence of two FUUSM Facebook pages.  Peg Clifford recommended that an "event" notice should be posted on Facebook for the Adult RE course, "Understanding and Appreciating Islam." Martha has conveyed the concerns to Michelle Wilson.
  8.. Other Matters Arising: Randy asked for clarification of the term "innovative music."  The Committee assured Randy that his choices to date have been very effective.  In terms of a decision-making framework, the group identified appropriateness to the service message, time issues, location (Sanctuary or Social Hall), and complexity of needed equipment & musicians.
 

Theme for Year 2017-2018 will be "How do we create a world of our values?"

  9.. Possible Topics and speakers for future services:  Sustainability: Annie Warmke, annie at bluerockstation.com,   Touchstone REACH Packet, Hungry Town, multiple intelligences with additional one - existential-spiritual, powerful children's stories, ages of women, This I Believe, family stories as carriers of family values, June Teenth celebration, reflections of people who grew up in UU congregation (Jay Phillips, Mike Bailey, Dean Banziger), Bill Bauer and Peg Clifford on suicide and kindness,  reflections of former ministers, Jim Couts on Jubilee Gardens, LeeAnn Gallucci on recovering from loss, Living Mindfully - Prepare for the Unexpected (Robin Bozian, Anita Newhart, Sue Montera, Virginia Mayle), anti-bullying and Shari's Flower Story, Quill as a storyteller, Quakers on consensus, morality of artificial intelligence. 
Mark Sibicky on mindset/habits of mind needed for democracy - Martha -- contact again in Summer or September 2017
