Minutes for November 1, 2017 Meeting of the Worship & Music Committee
In Attendance: Adeline Bailey, Maggie Meyer, Peg Clifford, Kat Hawbaker, Chris Jacobs, John Maddox, Martha McGovern, Suzyn Mills
Next Meeting: Wednesday, December 6, 2017 - 5:00 p.m., Parlor
1.. Minutes of the October meeting were approved - with the addition of Suzyn Mills in attendance
2.. Correspondence: Martha reported that all thank you notes have been sent. The Committee signed a birthday card for Neva Rees.
3.. Reports from Specific Task Teams:
1.. Aesthetics Team: will prepare the Sanctuary for holidays in coordination with Women's and Men's Groups The Committee recommended that candles of various colors be displayed in candelabras to symbolize FUUSM's celebration of diversity.
2.. Special Music Team: Suzyn reported that Choir will sing on Nov. 12 and that a quartet is preparing for a future service.
3.. Worship Associates Team: Chris Jacobs and Andrew Clovis have joined the WAs.
4.. Piano Task Force:
5.. Technology Task Force: The Committee agreed that multi-directional microphones continue to be a need. Martha will ask Mike Bailey and Ralph Olander to explore options and costs of two stationary microphones.
6.. Task Force for the Time for All Ages:
4.. Re-Usable Folder: The Committee discussed issues of content, space, placement, and wording. Adeline and Kat will proceed with finalizing the folder for implementation early in 2018.
5.. Board policy concerning special collections: Need to clarify procedures for counting, recording contributions to special causes -- deferred to December meeting
6.. Holiday Decoration
Women's Group has agreed to decorate (starting at 2:00 p.m.) and to meet in the Parlor (starting at 6:00 p.m.) on Wed., Nov. 29 and to dismantle and meet (same times) on Wed., Dec. 27.
Men's Group has agreed to decorate the outside of the building on December 2.
7.. Social Justice and Communication
1.. Peg expressed the need to have contact names and numbers for often requested community services. The Committee agreed that it would be good to provide directories in the church and a link on the website and to give members of the congregation a card for quick reference. - Kat will speak to the Board about the issue and training of greeters, Caring Committee members, and others.
8.. Other Matters Arising: Joe Baker has requested W & M Committee support and cooperation with Buildings & Grounds in continuing to deal with clutter concerns so that 1) the church facilities are functional and pleasing and 2) supplies are stored in orderly and accessible ways. He will take leadership in facilitating the joint efforts. Maggie Meyer volunteered to represent the Committee.
9.. Because painting and repairs of the Sanctuary will necessitate holding Sunday worship services in the Social Hall during January and February of 2018, BRIDGES Adult RE will need to move to a new location. Maggie Meyer reports that the Today's Issues Group is willing to meet upstairs in the RE Building so that the Adult RE group can meeting in the Parlor.
Theme for Year 2017-2018 will be "How do we create a world of our values?"
10.. Possible Topics and speakers for future services: Sustainability: Annie Warmke, annie at bluerockstation.com, Touchstone REACH Packet, Hungry Town, multiple intelligences with additional one - existential-spiritual, powerful children's stories, ages of women, This I Believe, family stories as carriers of family values, June Teenth celebration, reflections of people who grew up in UU congregation (Jay Phillips, Mike Bailey, Dean Banziger), Bill Bauer and Peg Clifford on suicide and kindness, reflections of former ministers, LeeAnn Gallucci on recovering from loss, Living Mindfully - Prepare for the Unexpected (Robin Bozian, Anita Newhart, Sue Montera, Virginia Mayle), anti-bullying and Shari's Flower Story, Quill as a storyteller, Quakers on consensus, morality of artificial intelligence.
