That would be a possibility. I mentioned to her if not a workshop, another option we may have a few businesses set up with tables and information about their offerings. However, I would also like to see other businesses there, too. Not just her. Maybe one or two martial arts studios, a police officer, someone from a woman’s shelter, . . .Just ideas. Maybe others will know of businesses related to self defense and women’s support groups, . . .

Could you see if she would just give us a talk? That way if women want to take the class they will know what to expect and it would be a commercial for her class.

Hi Anne:

I am having Rachel, from the gun shop, send me a description of the class. I may take the class at their shop in September to see what it is all about. It is pricey, at least it seems to me. It is $50 pp for 2 or 3 hours. I am not sure, but think the time difference relates to the number of students in the class, because there is a lot of one on one instruction. I will know more when Rachel gives me a description and certainly after I have taken the class myself. I believe the others will bulk at the price tag.

So I will keep you posted. I just sent this email to you and not the other ladies. On Sunday, I will give out a flyer about their company and some offerings.

Another idea is for her to just join us to teach us a couple of the basics for one hour. Annie

There is a fee . It may present a problem. It seems a bit high.

Today I stopped by the gun shop to get information about a self defense class ( without firearms ) for October for the women in our church and in the community. They offer a 2 - 3 hour class and can do it at our church. On Sunday, I will bring some of their brochures. But I need to get a hand out specifically about that class.

This is great!
I also wanted to mention to the group, I got in touch with Rachel, a woman (along with her husband ) has a business in Parkersburg that teaches self defense classes, conceal carry, hand gun & rifle. I explain we were thinking of having at our church something in Oct around self defense. Either having businesses set up tables to let women ( and men ) know about self defense, or maybe have workshops at the church. I told her, we were in the beginning stages of planning. I plan to go to her store to get more information. She is interested and would be flexible to our needs.

I will have more info after I visit with her.

In the past, I have had two conceal carry classes taught by men, macho men - yuck! I doubt we would want her to focus on this, but perhaps some women in the church or community may be interested in this type of self defense.

Here's a brief outline of what what we discussed at dinner last Wed. My brain was completely shut down so I wrongly stated the theme was healing, but instead it is "thriving". I put this talk together because I wanted to be able to say positive things about how to move forward as people, not just women. I think we could use this like a reading, with each topic including a very short story read by different women. It's meant as a guide - perhaps there are more topics that need to be added. I wanted to make it manageable as a 30 minute talk with examples.

The goal, as we discussed is to use this in Oct. for National Domestic Violence Month. If so, I only have Oct. 13th available. I think Jane mentioned that we would need a brief dress rehearsal, but we could also have a conference call to shape each short story. Just some thoughts to add to the discussion.

12 Steps to Thriving by Annie Warmke

During the coffee time a thriving banner will be created by people attending with a long sheet of packaging paper hanging up and markers so that it can be shared to create affirmations for flourishing, healing and success at thriving.

1: Face Your Fears: Culture promotes fear as control. Take that first step. It isn't the Grand Canyon.

2: Accept that your culture's version of being a man or a woman is a lie – tightly held cultural norms about who women and men can be.

3: Learn to love me - Maybe the hardest – change self-talk. We talk to ourselves at 15,000 words a minute so that meant I had to change my self-talk.

4. Develop a simple practice of meditation - take time for your needs and lower stress levels.

5: Expand my experiences – by investing in others – take a course, help out at something you want to learn

6: Meet others 50% of the way – invest in others but wisely – friendships/mentoring/peers

7: Learn to ask for what I need – sometimes I need to know what others think. It's what helps me to be successful in my work. I also need to feel nourished. There's nothing wrong with asking if you did a good job, or what people think of your work, or decisions or goals. It's all in how you ask, and who you ask.

8: Have a plan for my life – don't be Christopher Columbus

9: Love doesn't conquer all – I can love someone or something but not subject myself. Don't dirty fight – own my thoughts and feelings, use more emotions then anger/sadness, say things in a way that the other person can listen to me

10: Speak the truth – others speak of their bigotry, racism, hate – don't let it in. Decide ahead of time what to say.

11: Expect the males in your life to speak up to other men against sexism and racism.

12: Boldly walk only on my path – I can't give away something I don't have, boldness, confidence, etc. and I can't help by always taking on the role of the rescuer. Thriving takes lots of work and constant vigil.
