Green Sanctuary Folks,
Save Ohio Parks has discovered that almost all of the investment funds
from the Canada Pension Board is going to a Texas firm that is heavily
involved in fracking around public lands in Ohio.
Please sign the attached petition.

Subject: Petition to Canada Pension Plan - Stop making Ohio a fracking
sacrifice zone
To: Cathy Becker <cbecker at greenamerica.org>
Greetings Ohio friends,
Save Ohio Parks is doing one more push for our petition to the Canada
Pension Plan before we deliver it to them next week. We have 958 signatures
and would like to get to 1000.
*Can you help us circulate this among your Ohio friends and family? *

*Background*
The Canada Pension Plan is like the social security of Canada -- it serves
as a retirement plan for all Canadians except those in Quebec.
Recently we learned that the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB)
is not only investing heavily in fossil fuels -- *It is actually buying
fossil fuel operations*.
One company CPPIB essentially created is Encino Acquisition Partners (EAP),
a subsidiary of Encino Energy of Houston, Texas. EAP got the bids to frack
Valley Run and Zepernick Wildlife Areas in Ohio as well as ODOT land. They
are also heavily fracking around Ohio's largest state park, Salt Fork in
Guernsey County.
*Encino is one of the most prominent companies that's turning Ohio into a
fracking sacrifice zone -- and they are 98% owned by the Canada Pension
Plan.*
- CPPIB and Encino started EAP in 2017 with $1 billion from CPPIB.
- In 2018, CPPIB gave Encino $2 billion to buy all the Chesapeake
operations in Ohio.
- This year on Earth Day, CPPIB gave EAP another $300 million.
*How we will use the petition*
We think most Canadian pensioners have no idea the funds from their
paychecks are being invested in this way -- so we plan to tell them. We are
working with a Canadian environmental group called Shift Action that
campaigns on pushing retirement plans in Canada to divest from fossil
fuels.
We have requested a meeting with CPPIB, but did not get a response. Next
week, we'd like to send signatures from 1000 Ohioans asking CPPIB to stop
funding Encino. (We will send name, city, state, and any comments only --
not email addresses).
Then we will work with Shift Action to publicize this petition from Ohioans
to CPPIB across Ohio and Canadian media. In Ohio we have a major
climate-fueled drought. In Canada they are dealing with wildfires across
the northwest. The last thing Canadian retirement plans should be doing is
propping up fracking in Ohio.
We hope this will let Canadians know how their retirement funds are being
invested, so they can push CPPIB to do better. Besides the harm to our
health and the environment, fossil fuels are a bad investment. They have
underperformed the market for a decade, and they are stranded assets as the
world transitions to renewable energy.
*Take Action*
Please sign this petition yourself if you have not already, and please
share this with your family and friends. Together we can make a difference!
Best wishes,
Cathy
