Subject: [AppalachianCluster] FW: DC Climate Convocation: Could you help disseminate our invitation to DC, MD and VA congregations to participate in planning this May 6 climate convocation?

A number of green leaders from UU congregations in the DC metro region are planning a convocation May 6. We would like to invite other congregations, clergy and green leaders, to help us plan the event – and to attend in person or virtually. The planning group is meeting every other Saturday at 10:00.

Could you help us to invite congregations throughout the three states (and we are not restricting it only to those states, if folks from WV, PA, DE or elsewhere want to come, that would be great). I’d be happy to send invitations out if there is a list of congregations and contacts or would be even more happy if you would do it.

Our next biweekly zoom planning is March 11 at 10:00. Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84222818581?pwd=VzhlZUZWRXdwSmJsVGNibjVFU0hqZz09

The tentative agenda for the meeting is below.

UU DMV Climate Convening: May 6, 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

River Road UU Congregation

Outcomes and goals for the meeting:

· Form an ongoing DC, MD, VA - wide UU climate network

· Form ongoing climate-related focused interest groups,

· Create solidarity and support across congregations in DC, MD and VA. Create opportunities for working together and caring for one another. Welcoming others.

· Offer common programs, e.g., broad participation in planning, promoting monthly climate webinars/events.

· Create opportunities for celebration (e.g., annual DMV-wide UU climate event)

9:00-10:00 Informal gathering for coffee, light vegan breakfast, conversation.

Registration. Five sets of newsprint around breakfast walls for green leaders of congregations to write actions and campaigns in the areas of FIRE (energy production and conservation), AIR (GHG, other gaseous pollutants, particulate matter pollutants), WATER (pollution, flooding, conservation, etc.) LAND (habitat considerations, forests, food security/resilience, toxic dumps, waste disposal, etc.), JUSTICE/EQUITY (advocacy, actions that have equity as their primary goal and wouldn’t fall easily into the other categories). Colorful banners for each of the five areas may already exist from a MC-FACS event, or new ones created. Tables could also be set up by each banner for congregations to share displays and handout materials relevant to the topic.

Participants encouraged to view the newsprint descriptions and interact with UUs from other congregationns during the informal breakfast socializing hour.

We need all hands on deck for faster, bolder climate action. A window of opportunity remains open, but only a narrow shaft of light remains. António Guterres, UN General Secretary, November 7, 2022 COP 27
