Hello, all,
I am pleased to report that the plants we put in are doing well. Currently in bloom or nearly so are heliopsis, spiderwort, liatris, mountain mint, coneflower, monarda, gaillardia, and anise hyssop. And of course, the zinnias keep going. Swing by and take a look.
News and Needs
* The Historic Harmar Bridge Company has granted our request for an informational table at Harmar Days, which this year runs from the evening of July 30 to 4:00 on August 1. Even better, the table fee has been waived.
* I have several folding tables, but a canopy would be a good thing. Does anyone remember who owns the canopy we use for the plant sale?
* Volunteers needed! We need people to staff the table and talk about our project, pollinators, and the benefits of native plants in general. I plan to have some handouts printed for distribution, along with a sign about the Homegrown National Park initiative.
* Sprucing up needs
* Last week, George Banziger did a hero's work getting rid of some of the monster plants that forced their way through or between the sheets of solarization plastic. Some similar areas remain.
* Patching the plastic, which is deteriorating. I picked up a sheet of black plastic today at Lowe's, and we have a few landscape pins left, but human labor is needed.
* Weeding the staircase.
* Mulch. We have been encouraged to avail ourselves of the free mulch under the Washington Street bridge. Claire Mullen has offered the use of a truck, so who is up for a mulch-shoveling and -spreading party?
* Watering schedule.
* The regular Tuesday morning work gathering will take place tomorrow at 7:45. Feel free to join us. Bring gloves and your favorite tools. Because poison ivy keeps coming back no matter how much gets pulled out, long pants and long sleeves are recommended.
* People interested in volunteering for any spruce-up tasks: what are good days and times? We might want to set up at least one larger work group before Harmar Days.
