Our two "Bottle Boys"...  
Sometimes the universe just pinches me and says, “Look up!”.

An example was the day I responded to a Facebook post about two tiny nubian/alpine bucklings for sale in Perry County.  When I saw them, I knew they were the right little bottle boys for this farm.

I'm not a big fan of bringing new goats into the herd, because it often causes a lot of heartache as I watch their adjustment to the “closed” herd, or even worse, they bring disease.

But these two bucklings, whose dam died just after their birth, are the smartest and most loving goats I've ever raised. They knew their names right away - Howard and Lawrence - and they soon answered to them when called to come out of the herd.

In the evenings (and occasionally in the morning) I rest on a ledge in the barnyard with Howard and Lawrence vying to both rest across my legs and snuggle. They sniff my face, give some licks and meld into my body.  They could be puppies, or even children... they are so ungoat-like.

Howard will be the new buck of our herd (when he grows into the task).  He is so laid back and I hope he will pass along that trait to his kids.   Lawrence was banded, so he is a wether.  He and I plan to go on many hikes together.  He has a lot of energy and is the leader of this duo.

I know I am far too attached to these critters... I admit it.

So Where is the Silver Lining?  

The forester was here last week and issued a mighty fine plan for not just the 32 acres of white oak, beech, maple, hickory and poplar trees  - but provided all of the encouragement needed to keep up the work on the food forest plan.

Climate adaptation has become an important focus this year, and the forest plan from Kindler Forest Management LLC is going to be a valuable tool in helping the BRS forest to survive the vast climate changes happening already.

A Note from Jay and Me:  

After 40 years we are pretty sure it's going to last.

Who could have imagined all of those years ago when we first laid eyes on each other at a party on a farm just outside of Albany Ohio - that we could be looking back one day on our incredible adventure together and still be wishing for another 40 years.

A new sign at the entrance parking area at Blue Rock Statin now lists all of the places Jay and I have lived in our lives, as children and then as adults.

Three continents, two states, and many friends from various places have given us rich memories that often sustain us as we watch the world from our bubble.
