One positive about a fall sustainability forum--lots more local produce.

1. The solar class has 4 registrants, and bless their heart, another
person called this morning to pay for the class so that would make 5 (we
didn't take payment yet). We sent an email to the 4 that are registered
to see if they want to go ahead with the class or wait. Jay is willing
to go ahead, but I think we need to wait and see if there is a wave of
the virus hitting communities and the hospitals that serve them, which
the facts and figures show (NY Gov. Cuomo has promoted this idea today
in his news conference). The panic that has been obvious since last
week (and now the stock market), only makes me feel that anything we do
with the class ought to wait until we can have a success with the goal
of 10 or 12 students. Plus, it seems that the church administration
currently prefers that no activities are held for the next couple of
weeks, but I think this will go even longer if we consider that the
primary people getting the virus are older folks, and we older folks
make up a large portion of those who attend services.
2. As for the sustainability forum, I am of the opinion that we should
wait until fall. This is not based on the fact that people can't learn
to use Zoom, but the fact that as of today I, for one, am completely
focused on how to guide our business from the events we've planned, to
postponing them until fall (when the schedule was already fairly full).
I am also painfully aware that the role that I've played in my life, as
an empathetic person, is to keep those I love safe. This includes
humans but also my livestock and pets. If I am to stay focused on what
I have to do to make those things happen I don't see myself having the
energy to put effort into anything else. Surely there are other people
who are feeling that sort of distraction as well.
I did send Larry from Busy Bee a note, after he said they are having
problems with sourcing food that I would get back to him today about
whether or not we needed them to be our meal source. It seems safe to
say that I can let him know we are not going to need food.
Let's regroup as best we can with the idea that we've done a lot of hard
work, and we can plan for a September or October or even November
forum. Annie

However, members have agreed to draft letters to the editor. Adeline Bailey has written (and submitted) an excellent letter linking response to the coronavirus to the response needed to climate change. We have asked CCL members to work on these letters but to hold off on submitting them (unless they are tied to the coronavirus) because the latter issue is saturating the media.

It looks like the precautions against the coronavirus will move into next month and beyond. If the Forum as a social gathering is postponed, one option is to run it on Zoom. But that has numerous complications, e.g., how to run a PPT presentation and talk over it on Zoom. It is unlikely that people whom really want to engage in the Forum will be willing to participate in a Zoom-based event. Since the whole world is looking at a delay of 3-6 months for all public events, I would respectfully suggest doing the Forum in the fall.

>> According to its Facebook page, this event is still on, but I’ve written to organizer Kathy Ortt to verify. She might still be trying to decide (and that’s okay, too). I’ll let you all know what she says as soon as I receive it. Meanwhile, uh. what to do? Just wait and see, I guess.
>>
>> 8. Sustainability Forum
>> Next meeting will be Monday, March 16, at 7:15 p.m. (immediately following CCL)
>> Update on progress for GSC members who aren’t on planning subcommittee
>> As of 1:38 p.m. Sunday, March 15, the planning committee will meet virtually.
>> We know this much about the Sustainable Marietta Forum: Myra Moss will not be able to attend in person (but she’s still willing and eager to help us out); there will be no Just Dinner, and no lunch on Saturday. Workshops and the panel discussion will not be held in person on Saturday. There will be no Sunday afternoon discussion in person.
>> The planning committee is already looking for virtual alternatives: A Zoom meeting, or a webinar; and probably postponing the in-person event until we get an all-clear signal from officials we trust.
>> We DO NOT want to lose the momentum we have built for this event, so we want to do SOMETHING, and we need to decide ASAP what that something will be. STAY TUNED.
>>
>>>>> There its a separate mailing list (just a reply-all list) of those who have been involved in the sustainability forum planning subcommittee so as not to bother every single GSC member with email they don’t want. If you would like to be added to that list, please let me know! We’d be thrilled to have your ideas and input, and I’d be glad to add you to that list!! <<
>> Now, it’s your turn! Please reply with your input and ideas!! I need your help with all of the above!!! Thanks, and virtual hugs. —dawn
