[Green] So Far this Year is No Joke (July 2020)

With all this manure, there's bound to be a pony in here somewhere...  

Ever since the lock down from the pandemic, we have religiously held a morning “briefing” that includes reviewing a couple of news sources, the virus numbers, the weather, our calendars, our goals for the day, and a joke or two.

This process has made our day begin in a helpful (and most times, hopeful) way, and often leaves us going off to our separate offices laughing, But mostly we're laughing from just how bad the jokes are online.

(Two guys stole a calendar.  They each got six months.)
  The reason I bring this up is that we're desperate for some good jokes. Jokes like my grandpa and dad told - that made us all belly laugh no matter how often they were told. Jokes like the ones Jay has repeated for 39 years - but I'm so bad at jokes I never remember the punch line - so they're still funny after all of this time.

Last week we learned that the National Conservation Resource Center is awarding Blue Rock Station two grants. The first one is for creating a forest management plan  that focuses on non-timber products and will lay down a foundation for how we shape and use forest products for generations to come.

The second one is to install a high tunnel in the west field near where the barn is at the moment. The goal is to bring fruit trees indoors to avoid the hard freeze in the late spring (climate change) and to avoid the deer that have discovered everything we grow. The hope is that it will be more like a food forest with gooseberries, haskaps, and currents growing in the under story. It's all really exciting.

A Note from Jay and Me:  

It's pretty hot this summer, even though it started as if it was going to be a chilly one. And all of that heat has sent us a clear message...slow down.

Over the past four months we've had a big learning curve to bring three of our programs online, and we've worked long days doing it. 

So the Overlook calls to us to eat our lunch el fresco and an especially warm afternoon sometimes translates into a short nap.

Some days I briefly think we could get used to not having visitors.
