Hello green friends!

I knew I was cc-ing you in my reply to Kelcey Jacobs—reminding you that you’re invited to the Earth Hour party at my house Saturday. Bring snacks and something inspirational to read (if you’re so inspired) while we sit in the dark from 8:30 to 9:30. If you’re allergic to cats and/or dogs, please observe Earth Hour in your own sad, loveless (JOKING!), furless, dander-free home. I live at 622 N. 7th St. in Marietta. That’s between Warren and Washington, and I advise you to come via Warren so you’ll be on the correct side of the street to park. My house is on the OTHER side of the street though: white-painted brick with a GINORMOUS silver maple in front. I hope you can come!

I received email today from Virginia Henthorn confirming that the garden tour is being canceled this year, and stating that the GSC would take on the plant sale. WHAT?!? I replied to her to say that we were open to working with the Rosebuds (garden tour team) on a JOINT summer fund-raising project, and that we’d be happy to discuss it. But I never said we’d take on the plant sale! Yikes! If you hear rumors to that effect, please quell them!

I also received email today through Chris Keller. Ohio Interfaith Power and Light has been in touch with her hoping to interview us (or Dave Ballantyne, or maybe Kevin Morey, or George Banziger or someone else re: our solar panels and other green activities) for coverage in their April e-newsletter. Not sure whether this came out of the mention we got in the UU World magazine, or from receiving Honorable Mention in the Cool Congregation Challenge. But they have invited us to become more involved with Ohio IPL. You, too, can sign up for the newsletter at http://www.ohipl.org/about-us/e-newsletter-archive/ <http://www.ohipl.org/about-us/e-newsletter-archive/>, or visit their website at http://www.ohipl.org/ <http://www.ohipl.org/>

Re: Green Drinks. Please visit this website: http://www.greendrinks.org/Start <http://www.greendrinks.org/Start> . If we want to start a local chapter, we have to sign on to their “code," which doesn’t seem onerous, IMO. The only drawback is that we have to commit to it monthly. (The chapter in Bloomington didn’t meet June through August, though.) Chip Pickerington not quite but almost committed to sponsoring it (i.e., renting a room), maybe not for every meeting, but at least to get started. I’m inclined to start laying the groundwork to see if we can pull this off in a few months—after Earth Day (and spring bird migration). Would anyone like to take the reins on this? I would gratefully hand them over!

Reminder: The Planet group from the Mobilizing for Social Justice event last month will be meeting at 12:30 Sunday in the RE parlor. Even if you weren’t there, you’d be welcome. We’ll be working on a campaign to recognize and encourage local businesses to be more environmentally conscientious, and also to enlist help on consolidating environmental information and resources, which could lead to an update of It’s Easy Being Green. Wouldn’t that be a gift! Also, I see the Planet group as an untapped resource of enthusiastic environmental energy and workers. I think GSC would be wise to befriend them and work with them as much as possible. I hope you’ll come to this, too!

Finally, please see the message below re: the anti-fracking in the Wayne conference to be held in Reno Earth Day weekend. I suspect that none of us locals will opt to camp, but we might want to go for some of the events. For example, I think the next meeting of Keep Wayne Wild—Marietta Chapter will be Sunday afternoon, as campers are departing.

I think that’s all for now. Whew. Thanks for reading this whole thing!

> Hello!
>
> You are invited to the UCAN Camping Conference, April 21-23 in Marietta, OH.
>
> The weekend-long campout will bring together local grassroots organizations and community members to share information and strategize about stopping fracking in Wayne National Forest. We aim to establish channels of communication and foster personal relationships through presentations, discussions, trainings and workshops. Come conference end we hope to establish a better understanding of the issue, what is already being done, and develop a comprehensive plan to take further action to combat fracking in the Wayne.
>
> Many of you have heard that last December, 719 acres of the Wayne were privately auctioned off for fracking interests. A second auction, this time of 1,600 acres, is scheduled for March 23rd. More auctions are to come and up to 40,000 acres could be leased. Fracking, a process of extracting natural gas from shale formations deep underground, uses chemicals that contaminate water and air, perpetuating climate change and causing health issues, such as cancer and nervous system damage.
>
> To prevent further damage to our communities and environment, UCAN has been working with representatives from Sierra Club Ohio, Ohio Environmental Council (OEC), Athens County Fracking Action Network (ACFAN), Mid-Ohio Valley Climate Action (MOVCA), AppalachiaResist, Keep Wayne Wild, Buckeye Environmental Network, Frack Free Ohio, and various active individuals in the fight against fracking in Ohio. The goal of building a statewide coalition is to strengthen our efforts to stop these auctions and protect the Wayne.
>
> We want to hear from you!
>
> A few of the events for the weekend include an investigative photojournalism collection of hundreds of exposing shots from Bill Hughes, informative talks by people such as Bill Baker (founder of Frack Free Ohio) and representatives from OEC and Sierra Club, various interactive workshops, and a strategic direct action training accessible to all and led by AppalachiaResist. More speakers are in the works! There will also be live music and ample time to explore nature.
>
> Meals will be provided, but we welcome you to bring food as well. Attendance is FREE, but if you would like to donate to the conference, please do so here <https://www.youcaring.com/unitedcitizensactionnetworkucan-751548>.
>
> RSVP here <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Cb8c7MPY3Viy46RhTxhD62M_ZcgVFXXS2USAiho5blg/edit>, by no later than April 7th.
>
> More details about the weekend are to come upon RSVP. We hope you will join us for a weekend of community building and strategizing! Let’s do everything we can to keep the Wayne wild.
>
> UCAN is an all inclusive organization. We do not discriminate based on race, gender, sexual orientation, political affiliation or other identifying characteristic. This event is accessible to all. If you have any individual accommodations such as dietary needs or camping equipment, please let us know.
