I hope you can come!</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">I received email today from Virginia Henthorn confirming that the garden tour is being canceled this year, and stating that the GSC would take on the plant sale. WHAT?!? I replied to her to say that we were open to working with the Rosebuds (garden tour team) on a JOINT summer fund-raising project, and that we’d be happy to discuss it. But I never said we’d take on the plant sale! Yikes! If you hear rumors to that effect, please quell them!</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">I also received email today through Chris Keller. Ohio Interfaith Power and Light has been in touch with her hoping to interview us (or Dave Ballantyne, or maybe Kevin Morey, or George Banziger or someone else re: our solar panels and other green activities) for coverage in their April e-newsletter. Not sure whether this came out of the mention we got in the <i class="">UU World</i> magazine, or from receiving Honorable Mention in the Cool Congregation Challenge. But they have invited us to become more involved with Ohio IPL. Chip Pickerington not quite but almost committed to sponsoring it (i.e., renting a room), maybe not for every meeting, but at least to get started. I’m inclined to start laying the groundwork to see if we can pull this off in a few months—after Earth Day (and spring bird migration). Would anyone like to take the reins on this? I would gratefully hand them over!</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Reminder: The Planet group from the Mobilizing for Social Justice event last month will be meeting at 12:30 Sunday in the RE parlor. Even if you weren’t there, you’d be welcome. We’ll be working on a campaign to recognize and encourage local businesses to be more environmentally conscientious, and also to enlist help on consolidating environmental information and resources, which could lead to an update of <i class="">It’s Easy Being Green</i>. Wouldn’t that be a gift! Also, I see the Planet group as an untapped resource of enthusiastic environmental energy and workers. I think GSC would be wise to befriend them and work with them as much as possible. I suspect that none of us locals will opt to camp, but we might want to go for some of the events. We aim to establish channels of communication and foster personal relationships through presentations, discussions, trainings and workshops. Come conference end we hope to establish a better understanding of the issue, what is already being done, and develop a comprehensive plan to take further action to combat fracking in the Wayne.<br class=""><br class="">Many of you have heard that last December, 719 acres of the Wayne were privately auctioned off for fracking interests. A second auction, this time of 1,600 acres, is scheduled for <span class="gmail-aBn" tabindex="0"><span class="gmail-aQJ">March 23rd</span></span>. More auctions are to come and up to 40,000 acres could be leased. Fracking, a process of extracting natural gas from shale formations deep underground, uses chemicals that contaminate water and air, perpetuating climate change and causing health issues, such as cancer and nervous system damage.<br class=""><br class="">To prevent further damage to our communities and environment, UCAN has been working with representatives from Sierra Club Ohio, Ohio Environmental Council (OEC), Athens County Fracking Action Network (ACFAN), Mid-Ohio Valley Climate Action (MOVCA), AppalachiaResist, Keep Wayne Wild, Buckeye Environmental Network, Frack Free Ohio, and various active individuals in the fight against fracking in Ohio.
