I found Oberlin Ohio's "Climate Action Plan" on line. Oberlin is of interest, because they are a small city (8400 population), located in Loraine County, Ohio, and the home of Oberlin College. They have been active on Climate since 2001. Their 2013 Action Plan gives their "goals" as; 50% reduction by 2015 from 2007 baseline, 75% by 2030, 100% (net zero) by 2050. Since 2015 is now past and only 2 years after the 2013 goal, it would be interesting to learn from their experience and relative achievement towards the 2015 goal.
The plan is 33 megs, and too big to e:mail. You can retrieve a copy on-line at oberlin ohio GHG. I haven't read it yet.

Base Year Short Term Goal Medium Term Goal Long Term Goal
Cincinnati 2006 40% by 2028 84% by 2050
Cleveland 2010 16% by 2020 40% by 2030 80% by 2050
Columbus 2013 20% by 2020
Pittsburgh 2003 20% by 2023
Pittsburgh is not Ohio, but fairly close to us. I believe that Oberlin Ohio has also made a goal commitment. Oberlin is mentioned in the report, but does not appear in the Appendix list. It would be nice to add Marietta to this list.

Dave:
Thanks for sharing this report.
It seems to me that focusing our green efforts on local governments will be more productive in the near future than trying to push these initiatives nationally--federal initiatives will be minimal for reducing GHG emissions and promoting renewables.
I noticed that only one Ohio city (Columbus) was listed in the appendix for cities making a commitment to reduce GHG emissions by a certain date. It would be good if Marietta could join that list. I didn't see any WV cities on that list.
Do you think Marietta City would be willing to adopt the Five Milestone approach?

I've been reading the WWF-ICLEI report attached, in preparation for the presentations MOVCA will be making to Vienna and Parkersburg City Councils in April. There is overlap in the actual improvement programs used by the various cities profiled. This is more what and how, versus WHY.

The "networking" presented and described by Roger Wilkins to MOVCA 1/19/17 of separate but related organizations within the community is another example.

Perhaps we can offer to assist the worship assistant in planning the other elements of the service. Dave Ballantyne is willing to give a presentation on solar power for the service, but would prefer to do so during the summer, downstairs, when AV is more feasible. That makes sense.

Dave also said he’d be willing to present at two of them: one on working with local government (a presentation I found interesting, informative, and inspiring at a MOVCA meeting); and the other on the science of climate change—which seems like a topic based on FACTS we all might find useful to understand. I hope you agree with me that these are worthy topics. Dave said he’d like to claim back-to-back weeks, and had a slight preference for the 23 and 30.

(I, too, learned this technique from Cindy Brown, and had great success with it last year.). If George were to present this on April 2, it would be great timing for starting warm-weather crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and maybe beans. (Lettuces and other greens can be planted directly in the ground in March.) George, would you be willing to do this on April 2?
