Did anyone else get this? Don’t answer that. Just thought SOMEONE might be interested. It seems to be open to everyone.

Environmental Justice Network members and friends,

Welcome back from the summer! We are excited to host our first EJ Network conversation of the Fall this September 8th, 7PM EST (4PM PST). Our topic for this session will be Anti-Oppressive Disaster Preparation and Response with Paul Dalzell.

With the current flooding in Baton Rouge, it seems extremely timely to turn our attention to ways in of being ready for disasters and especially focusing on communities who are often already marginalized. After hearing from our speaker, Paul Dalzell, we will divide into small groups and discuss ways we learn to prepare our communities for the unexpected, and what we might do in response to what we learn from our local marginalized communities about their needs.

  Our Presenter
Paul Dalzell was "flushed into activism" on Jan. 9, 2014 when 7,500 gal of the coal cleaning chemical crude MCHM was spilled into the Elk River about one mile upstream of the region's only water intake in Charleston WV. Residents were advised not to drink, cook with, bathe, or wash with West Virginia American Water Company tap water; up to 300,000 of his closest friends and neighbors were affected.

Since then Paul helped form and has worked with the group Advocates for a Safe Water System, which is working to municipalize the water system, and the Clean Water Task Force, who has dispersed monies donated to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Charleston, WV after the contamination, with the emphasis on direct relief, education, and advocacy.

After the recent floods which devastated 1/3 of West Virginia, the CWTF sprang back into action, assisting with flood relief efforts in the state. He has also worked with various other groups working on environmental, social, and racial justice issues in the area.

Since we anticipate this conversation will be popular, we will be opening registration via email for our members and previous attendees first (that’s you!), and on August 20th, we’ll be opening the event to other interested parties via Facebook invite. If you are not able to attend on Sept. 8th at 7PM EST, we will be hosting a second conversation with a recording of the original presentation and small group conversations on Sept. 15th at 7PM EST. Each session is capped at 50 participants.
