[Fuusm-l] The Cost of Hiring a Minister

At the last men's group meeting, I was asked how much the church was paying
in employee compensation for the minister. I didn't have the figure at
hand, but in 2020 the total was $64,647. Most of this was for Salary and
Housing Allowance, health insurance was about $9000. It has probably gone
up a little since 2020, but the important question is what we would need to
commit for the future.

The UUA has guidelines (Congregational Salary Program
<https://www.uua.org/leaderlab/congregational-salary>) for what a
minister's salary should be, which take into account the size of the
congregation and the cost of living in the community. When I checked, we
were paying about the recommended amount.

If we go on a national search for a new full time minister, following the
procedures the UUA has established, this is likely what we would have to
offer to be competitive. At the men's group, several people said the job
market for ministers is competitive, but I have no familiarity with this.
Hiring a full time minister is a long term commitment. If we could find a
minister who is already living locally, and who might be available to work
part-time, it could be less.
