If the title of this email got your attention, you may be interested in
this week's Today's Issues readings even if you can't make it to the group
which meets at 9:30 in the parlor of the Religious Education building next
to the church. This Sunday we will be viewing art works on the TV screen
in the room
Our first reading, ""See More, Think More
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jP6DSsKKMD7iSNTmFYrljXpTRhzEfDoNhdXrJBMg0RA/edit?usp=sharing>,"
by Jed Pearl, is from the May 13 issue of the New York Review of Books.
This is the art issue, and we will be focusing on the works of Michelangelo
and Picasso and discussed in several books by renowned art scholar Leo
Steinberg. The attached printable copy includes images of many of the art
works discussed. The Philosophical Brothel

is
one of Steinberg's essays, an analysis of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, a
painting that was originally called The Philosophical Brothel. The essay
includes images of the drawings Picasso did as studies for that work.
Our second topic will be three brief stories from the New York Times on
taboo words. The first, "How the N-Word Became Unsayable," is by John
McWhorter a well-known journalist who is back. This article contains
obscenities and racial slurs, fully spelled out. Ezekiel Kweku, the Opinion
politics editor, and Kathleen Kingsbury, the Opinion editor, wrote about
how and why the Times came to the decision to publish these words. The
third story is about a dispute at the Rutgers University law school about a
student voicing the "N-Word" (not the euphemism but the actual word) when
reading verbatim from a legal opinion. A printable copy of the NY Times
opinion essays is here.
