Honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 1/18 (11am) on Zoom & Facebook
Restoring Ruins of Generations Worship Leader: Rev. Kathryn Hawbaker
We have seen a heartening rise in voter engagement, and a disturbing rise in violence and polarization.
Let’s address issues of power and authority in our democratic institutions, with truth and reason as our guides. One basic definition of racism presented by Dr. William Jones is prejudice plus power. There has been increased visibility and attention to marginalized voices and views, but further education and conversation is needed if we are to keep moving forward.
What have we learned from the Black Lives Matter movement, and how shall we move forward in our work
to dismantle white supremacy culture? What was your response when different standards seemed to be applied by police dealing with protestors? What insights have been meaningful in your efforts to be anti-racist?
Marietta College is hosting several book discussion groups online to honor the day.
Titles include: Multiplication is For White People by Lisa Delpit;
So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo; It’s Time to Talk (And Listen) by Anatasia S. Kim;
For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood by Christopher Emdin
Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria by Beverly Daniel Tatum

President Joe Biden – Inauguration Day
(7pm) Men’s Group on Zoom
January 24 - "Braver Angels" - George Banziger and Bev Horstman, speakers
11:00 a.m. on Zoom and Facebook
Braver Angels is a national organization trying to address the problem of political polarization in our country. George is a member of Braver Angels. Also visiting by Zoom will be Ms. Bev Horstman, State Coordinator of the Ohio chapter of the organization.
Since the presidential election Braver Angels has sponsored two initiatives to address polarization:
Holding America Together and With Malice Toward None. George and Ms. Horstman will describe those two initiatives. Other initiatives by Braver Angels are planned for the first part of 2021. A group of people in the Marietta community, including FUUSM members and friends, have expressed an interest in Braver Angels and in supporting Braver Angels' initiatives in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Braver Angels and the principles it supports are similar in several ways to FUUSM principles.
