FUUSM Family,

This is a follow-up of the announcement I made in church about Harvest of Hope needing volunteers.

Harvest of Hope (HoH) is our local non-profit Food Rescue program that gathers food from local sources (grocery stores, food processors, farmers) that would otherwise be wasted and distributes them to the roughly 20+ local food pantries and community meals that are serving those who need food assistance. HoH needs volunteers as drivers and helpers. We have a monthly schedule of pick ups and deliveries (Monday-Friday) and currently about a third to a fourth of the slots are routinely open. Volunteers can sign up to fill slots regularly or fill empty slots as needed.

Here are the details ... The truck is about twice the size of a pick-up truck, with a big refrigerated box. Helpers do the logging of weights and help with the lifting/moving. A typical load is roughly 150-300 lbs. with individual cases typically 10-50 labs. A typical run takes 2-3 hrs (some outlying food pantries may take 4 hrs) and starts in the morning (8:30 – 10 a.m. due to limited pick-up hours at the stores). They start near the Busy Bee restaurant in Marietta, where the truck is parked. We have men and women as volunteers, filling the driver and helper roles as they feel appropriate. I can think of 5-6 people (men and women) from FUUSM who routinely volunteer for HoH. It is very satisfying work, and we have fun doing it.

If you have the time (2-4 hrs, once a month) and energy, HoH is a great way to directly work on a social justice issue that is both local and pressing. If you can help, either as a regularly scheduled volunteer or as a fill-in, please let me know.

Darryl
