Minutes for July 3, 2018 Meeting of the Worship & Music Committee
In Attendance: Adeline Bailey, Peg Clifford, Kat Hawbaker, Randall Kidder, Martha McGovern,
Shari Miller, Suzyn Mills
Next Meeting: Wednesday, August 8, 2018 5:00 p.m., Parlor
1.. Approved minutes of the June meeting with addition of Maggie Meyer in the attendance list.
2.. Correspondence: up to date
3.. Reports from Specific Task Teams:
1.. Aesthetics Team: The Committee identified the need for a Worship Associate's Checklist in the Social Hall. Martha will send the checklist via email to all Worship Associates and Kat will place a copy in the podium in a plastic page-saver.
2.. Special Music Team: Suzyn - Special music is planned for July 29.
Andrew McKnight has agreed to provide special music and the reflection for September 23. Cost will be $200.
Dennis Warner (Beads on One String-anti-bullying) is a possibility for fall of 2019. She
is coordinating with other venues.
3.. Worship Associates Team: Orient/re-orient so that all duties are addressed consistently.
4.. Piano Task Force: Suzyn
5.. Technology Task Force: Mike Bailey has purchased another multi-directional microphone and charged the purchase to the 2017-18 budget. Martha will remind him to submit for reimbursement.
6.. Task Force for the Time for All Ages:
3.. Affirmation in hymnals: Suzyn will prepare labels; Suzyn & Martha will place in books.
4.. Coordination with Buildings & Grounds: Maggie (Please see email with report.)
5.. The Committee suggested that all committees allocated a bulletin board (Membership, Social Justice, Green Sanctuary) should designate a person to keep the display up-to-date and attractive. Kat recommended that Nancy Lee coordinate this oversight.
Nancy Lee has agreed to oversee the bulletin boards for Community Resources and FUUSM Events.
7.. Board Update: Shari and Kat reported on the implementation of the special collection for Black Lives UU and the Going Forth pilot project.
8.. Expenditures: The Committee agreed that Mike Bailey should seek reimbursement for the personal phone charges incurred when that connection was needed for live-streaming of the GA worship service. Martha will remind him to do so.
9.. Assessment of June services:
Flower Communion service
What went well: The overall service was beautiful, and the choir piece very appropriate.
What to refine: Have clear segments/procedures for contributing, blessing, and taking away flowers, so the tone of a communion is established and maintained. Bring the service to complete, graceful closure before introducing any other element [e.g., photograph, announcements].
Diverse Perspectives: communicated by flowers and content of service
Thematic: World of our values - diversity, respect for individuality
Spirituality/Faith Traditions: communion
Life Span: an all-ages service
Short Service at Multicultural Festival Picnic
Attendance (48) was good, and the gathering built community, especially for those who live in the Parkersburg area.
The Committee suggested that the service be abbreviated to a grace before the brunch with a basket available for donations. Attendees would be encouraged to participate in the Inter-Faith Service at noon.
Kat observed that coverage of a booth at the Multicultural Festival was difficult to arrange and suggested, instead, that FUUSM visibility might be more effectively achieved by being a sponsor of the event for a cost of $500. Our name and information would be on the website and other advertisements.
[Displaying the FUUSM banner at the picnic site also gives visibility. Other idea: UUs could wear our t-shirt on Sunday and carry information cards to pass out when people inquire.]
10.. Services for July, August, September:
11.. Theme for Year 2018-2019: "How can we inspire leaders for a complex world?" [Try inductive approach and re-cap]
12.. 2017-18 "How do we create a world of our values?"
