Minutes for July 13, 2016 Meeting of the Worship & Music Committee
Next meeting: August 3, 2016 – 5:00 p.m. in Parlor

  1. Minutes of the meeting on June 1 -- approved
  2. Correspondence: Shari will send thank you notes to Lynda smith, Ralph Olander, Jim Rapp, Jane Tumas-Serna, and Nancy Novak
  3. Follow-up on the hospice presentation: Kat has spoken with the Visiting Team and will contact Patricia Sheldon about a Saturday workshop and Sunday morning service in the fall.
  4. Set-up for Summer Services: Adjustments to WA Duties follow:
     * Place sign on front steps. The sign notifies attendees that the service is in Fellowship Hall. The sign is located in the closet in FH.
     * Placement of the platforms is the responsibility of the WA. Please arrange to have help for the set-up.
     * For services, put all chairs out and (as much as possible) place a hymnal and order of service on each chair. (Cozy Conversations will probably need 35 chairs.)
     * There will be no recording during this summer’s services. If attendees want a copy of the presenter’s remarks, have them make the request directly to the speaker.
     * A copy of the WA Duties for the summer services is inside the podium in FH.
  5. Storage of Chairs in FH: Buildings & Grounds has been notified of the concern. Placing one storage rack in FH proper seems to work well. For the present time, the larger storage rack remains in the kitchen.
  6. Reports from Specific Task Teams:
     *   Sanctuary Decoration Team: Kat
     * Special Music Team: The “One Voice” group will participate in a gospel sing in Parkersburg in August. Suzyn will contact Lydia Hyde for a future service.
     * Piano Task Force: Suzyn reported that Randy & Jessica are planning a concert for early October 2016. Each will receive 25% of the proceeds, and 50% of the proceeds will go to the Piano Fund.
     * Technology Task Force: Ralph Olander and Mike Bailey will investigate the replacement of the current projector with a new device for smooth transmission of images to the TV. Kat will work with them to meet a specific goal date and use.
     * Task Force for the Time for All Ages: Shari Miller, Kerry Blair, Dawn Weidner, Cindy Burton, Diane McMichael, Adeline Bailey, and Ron Tepley. (Rachel Hyde, Gwen Banziger -- possible additions)
     * Clutter Corps: (Contact - Wendy Morey) Kat will talk with the Board to see where the Clutter Corps fits in the organizational chart so that communication and decision-making are systematic.
  7. Music stands: Suzyn
  8. Pianist: Because music is such an essential and integral part of the worship service, the Committee would like to recommend that arrangements with the pianist reflect the valuable contribution he makes to all services. The Committee approved the draft memo, and Martha will send a copy of the Committee’s position to John Kidd of the Finance Committee and George Banziger of the Board.
  9. Selection of Specific Lamp for Piano: Joe Baker reported after the meeting that he will be meeting with the Piano Task Force to discuss the purchase of the lamp.
  10. Expenses: Requisition for Rev. Lynda Smith – June 19 service
  11. Summer Services and Theme for Year 2016-17: The group concurred that the summer services can start to weave in the year’s theme of “What does democracy look like?” Kick-off will be July 3.
Possible Topics and speakers for future services: multiple intelligences, forgiveness, powerful children’s stories, ages of women, This I Believe, family stories as carriers of family values, June Teenth celebration, reflections of people who grew up in UU congregation (Jay Phillips, Mike Bailey, Dean Banziger), Bill Bauer on suicide and kindness, reflections of former ministers, Jim Couts on Jubilee Gardens, LeeAnn Gallucci on recovering from loss, Jeff Danner (mjwd58 at yahoo.com<mailto:mjwd58 at yahoo.com>) theological topic of choice, involvement in democracy (Willa O’Neill, Roger Kalter, Jim Rapp, Moon Mullens, Katy McGlynn), Living Mindfully – Prepare for the Unexpected (Robin Bozian, Anita Newhart, Sue Montera, Virginia Mayle), Harvest of Hope, anti-bullying and Shari’s Flower Story, Quill as a storyteller.
