Well said. I agree, Michele. It is a day to celebrate the harvest. Living in rural WV on our farm, I am keenly aware of the changing of seasons and of preparing for the upcoming season.

Good afternoon,

 

While the way people view this day varies, we are choosing to close because many people have the day off and it allows extended families and chosen friends to spend time together over a meal. At my house, I celebrate the bounty of the last harvest festival that many cultures throughout history have celebrated. To me, it’s time to button down the hatches and get cozy for the cold season ahead as we remember how blessed we have been to enjoy a plentiful year.

I, myself, have divorced the celebration from the atrocities that our ancestors put upon the Native Americans. I grieve for all the cultures lost to the pursuit of “progress” and greed. I work every day with the goal to NOT continue that tradition and instead, to do things differently.

In my personal life, I seek to learn about the systemic racist thinking that has permeated our culture. I seek to make changes as I find supremacist concepts that have snuck into my life. The ideas of tribal living and caring for those around us are all but gone. However, we can do little things in our own lives to bring back some form of community and support for our neighbors in need.

I don’t claim to have it all figured out, but we have to start somewhere, so, enjoy your family or chosen family today. Take a few minutes to learn a little bit more about why this day isn’t celebrated by everyone. I encourage you to find one thing you can incorporate into your life to make the world a better place. We can’t fix the past, but we can certainly work to make the future better.
