We will be in Ruse, but for a short time. We'll make it a point to drink some wine, beer, rakia and coffee! We're hoping they'll offer some of the local cuisines on the boat. Thanks for the tips!

If you are flying into Bucharest, will you visit Ruse and  Veliko Turnovo?  A friend helped with the fortress excavations back in the Seventies. If the timing works, I have dear friends who live in Ruse.

In terms of food and drink, my absolute favorite food there is shopska, a tomato and cucumber salad, with fresh bread, but the Bulgarians love their meat dishes, which I did not sample. Banitsa, a cheese bread, comes in a number of versions, all of them good. My favorite wine is Mavrud, Chase's favorite beer was Zagorka, and the national drink is rakia, a VERY fiery brandy. If you can get it made with apricots, try it. I also recommend Vienskakafe (that's the pronunciation--no idea how it's spelled), a strong coffee with whipped cream and cinnamon that is basically a dessert.

Flying to Bucharest and then cruising up the Danube to Budapest. We'll be stopping in a couple of towns in Bulgaria. What should we seek out for food and drink?
