I am thinking about hosting a showing of this Netflix documentary the
week of Jan. 19th. It demonstrates a compelling argument for what we
are doing in the Philips Subdivision neighborhood, and by passes so much
of what we've been taught makes us "American" and cuts right to the
chase for the reason we must learn how to form clubs and associations if
we are to save our democracy. When I first pitched the idea of the
Neighborhood Group to ReImagine Appalachia it competed with poor
communities needing clean water, or safer access roads and more. I
thought everyone would think it just didn't have enough importance to
real cultural change for a community. This documentary shows the
science of what we are doing, and it's re-affirming to see what's
possible if we just keep trying.
If you'd be interested in joining me to watch the documentary and
discuss how it might influence the work that each of us is doing in
different areas please let me know a date a time (could be in daytime).
I hope to have others from the neighborhood to join us.
“A leader today needs to be one who convenes people, who convenes
diversity, who convenes all viewpoints in processes where our
intelligence can come forth. So these kinds of leaders do not give us
the answers, but they help us gather together so that together we can
discover the answers.” –Margaret Wheatley
The feature documentary "*/Join or Die/*" (2023)
<https://www.joinordiefilm.com/#about>, illustrating the work of *Robert
Putnam* (book /“Bowling Alone”/), is now on *Netflix*.(This film is also
inspiring*/local/ events*: Following this link, scroll down to
"upcoming *community screenings*" on this *community-building film's*
website.)This is “*a film about why you should join* a 'club' -- and why
the fate of America depends on it.”
America’s decades-long *decline in community connections* (including at
parishes) could hold the answers to our democracy’s present *crisis*.
See the related and excellent book, highlighted in this film,
co-authored by Putnam “*/The Upswing: How America Came Together a
Century Ago and How We Can Do It Again
