Rebecca,

You will leave a hole in our hearts. I realize life changes need to happen, but tears came when I realized it is time for you to move the next chapter. I hope you will stay in contact with us and occasionally visit. Wishing you all the best!

Debra

Dear fellow greenies,

After a lot of thought and discussion, Chase and I are in the process of buying a condo in Toledo, so I will probably be leaving Marietta in October. Given the state of my arthritic spine and other problematic body parts, this is a good move for us but does leave a hole in certain projects.

Obviously, the habitat will need a new coordinator/organizer/steward, or ideally a team to share those responsibilities. Of the original coordinating team, all have undergone life changes and cannot head up a team. Would someone in this group feel able to take over as coordinator or serve on a planning and oversight team? I will be available for consultation by phone or Zoom whenever necessary, and some of us have brainstormed a plan that—if we could get enough volunteers to carry it out—would simplify ongoing maintenance.

As you know, the habitat falls under the umbrella of Marietta Main Street, and Geoff Schenkel and I will be meeting with the director tomorrow afternoon to discuss ideas. I will share the results of that discussion in my report. I have also put the word out among the master naturalists and am approaching Marcus McCartney about speaking to the master gardeners about anyone who might want to take the habitat on as a volunteer project, though most of those folks lack native plant expertise. Katy Lustofin of the MC biology department and I have discussed the possibility of a bioblitz to document the life on the site, and I have asked her to think about an individual or group that might want to take on a larger role with the habitat. Some students have volunteered for specific projects, though I do not know which of them are still in town.

I will likely miss the September 15 meeting because of a family wedding in Dayton. There is a possibility of getting away early enough on Sunday to get back in time, but that weekend will be my first opportunity to meet my granddaughter's partner.

Working will all of you over the years has been a wonderful thing, and I will definitely be back at FUUSM from time to time.

Rebecca
