So I receive this newsletter. Wanted to share.

Of course the Kimmerer interview is of interest to Green Sanctuary. But
also the film series, and online course may be of interest to us, as well
as MOVCA.

“We are blessed to receive the gifts of the Earth, and then we have to give
our gifts back in return. That’s the circle.”

Interview with Robin Wall Kimmerer *

This year, it seems especially relevant to reflect on the spiritual values
we so urgently need at the core of our social and cultural systems. How can
we return to an ethic of care and reciprocity in the way we live? In this
conversation, Potawatomi botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer celebrates the
serviceberry—both as a plant of joyous generosity, and as a living model
for a gift economy that recognizes the sacred nature of the Earth. Speaking
about her latest book, which elaborates on an essay she wrote for us in
2020, Robin orients us to a set of principles known as “the Honorable
Harvest”—ethical and pragmatic teachings about being in right relationship
with the Earth’s gifts: taking only what you need, sharing abundance, and
giving thanks. By embodying them, she says, we can learn to live rooted in
practical reverence for the land and each other.

In this poem, Chickasaw poet Linda Hogan writes:

*Sometimes there is an opening*

*in what you call time. That’s when you hear the voices*

*from long before your own silken life of a soul was born.*

*Your spirit traveled. Old ones came to meet it.*

*You were the future they sang for.*

Evoking the hope and resilience of her ancestors, who suffered untold
violence and loss, Linda sees how, over the long arc of time, the stories
and wisdom of those who came before her continue to seed a song of what is
sacred.

Separated from the fabric of the cosmos, the vast mystery of Time has been
distilled into a tool of control. But what kind of Time listens and moves
in tune with the Earth; travels not in a straight line, but in a circle?
Journeying through its many landscapes—deep time, geological time, kinship
time, ancestral time, and sacramental time—*Volume 5: Time*, our first
hardcover edition, asks: If we can recognize a different kind of Time, can
we come to dwell within it?

In our new Shifting Landscapes Film Series, four storytellers respond to
uncertainty and loss in the places they call home: a melting Icelandic
glacier, the desecration of a sacred Hawaiian mountain, a changing way of
life in the forests of Cambodia, and the vanishing song of the nightingale
in southern England. This series explores how a singer, a poet, a writer,
and a filmmaker embrace the alchemical power of story to connect and
transform us, each holding both catastrophe and love as our landscapes
change and disappear.

*What does it mean to lead amid the turmoil of our ecological unraveling
from a place that centers the Earth not as an abstract idea, but as a
living presence?*

For the very first time, *Emergence* is offering our Seeds of Radical
Renewal leadership course as an online and in-person hybrid, facilitating a
deeper immersion into the practical application of spiritual ecology and
adaptive leadership. Opening a space for in-depth explorations of how we
might respond to the social and ecological challenges of our time from a
space of connection; listen to voices and intelligences outside our own;
share power in community; and learn to relinquish uncertainty, this course
will offer mentoring to emerging leaders on building relationships with
human and more-than-human communities and applying the values of renewal,
reciprocity, and reverence to real-world projects.

This course will run as a UK and a US iteration under the guidance of guest
teachers *James Bridle*, *Dana Karout*, *Sam Lee*, *Joycelyn Longdon*,
and *Emmanuel
Vaughan-Lee*, and will be structured as a six-part online workshop, before
culminating in a four-day, in-person retreat at either Sharpham Trust in
Devon or the Whidbey Institute in Washington State.

Robert Moor*

In this narrated essay, writer Robert Moor journeys to Haida Gwaii, an
island chain in British Columbia, for the anniversary of a historic
agreement between the Haida Nation and the Canadian government that
protects the landscape’s last remaining old-growth forests after decades of
logging. As he walks through forest stewarded for generations by Haida,
Robert begins to see the tangle of Sitka spruces and cedars, mosses and
lichens, not as a site of slow decay, but of ongoing growth. How can being
in the presence of ancient trees, he asks, help us feel, rather than
intellectualize, not only the deep past, but also our responsibility to the
future?
