Dear Dr. Sparks,

Thank you for your note on the value and importance of the Ohio River and
efforts to make the river more resilient. My family and I live a stone’s
throw from the Ohio River in Cincinnati and rely on it for clean water, so
I am keenly aware of its significance as a source of fresh water, its
recreational benefits and the river’s role as an economic engine for our
region.

As you point out, the chemical release into the Ohio River from the train
derailment in East Palestine highlighted the vulnerability of the river.
Since the derailment, I have been working to ensure quick, but thorough,
clean-up of these chemicals, robust water quality monitoring programs for
impacted communities, and prevent future train derailments with my Railway
Safety Act of 2023.

My office has met with the Ohio River Basin Alliance, and I look forward to
seeing their basin-wide restoration plan later this year, which I
understand is modeled after the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI).
The GLRI is successfully coordinating federal investment and resources in
an effective manner to protect and restore an invaluable natural resource.
I am proud to be staunch supporter of GLRI and agree it could provide a
blueprint for the Ohio River.

Thank you again for your note on one of Ohio’s finest natural resources and
am excited to work collaboratively to protect and restore the Ohio River.
