Hello, all,
There were only 5 of us to conduct business at the GSC meeting today. One
of the items on the agenda was the business resolution calling for the UU
Common Endowment Fund's immediate divestiture from fossil fuel investments
to be discussed at the GA next week. We had recommended to the FUUSM Board
of Trustees state our congregational approval of the proposed resolution,
which they did. Based on that
Board action, we conveyed that decision to Rebecca Phillips, one of our
delegates to GA.
In discussion, I wanted to share the statement that UUMFE had put forward
concerning the resolution, but I couldn't locate it quickly. (Rebecca also
shared this info to Green, so this is a repeat.) Their statement is worth a
read, since it somewhat deals with the *immediacy *issue.
Here's a link to the UUMFE newsletter where their thoughts about the matter
are laid out:
https://www.uumfe.org/2023/06/13/uu-ministry-for-earth-reflections-on-the-business-resolution-for-the-2023-uua-general-assembly-complete-divestment-from-the-fossil-fuel-industry-and-subsequent-reparations/
In that material, there is also a link to a video of the June 10 mini
assembly about the resolution and proposed amendments. (I haven't watched
it yet, but it would be interesting to hear from some of the young people
who were proposing the resolution.)
This is just FYI, since a decision has been made concerning our
congregation's vote on the proposed business resolution, but since it
really is a big deal, maybe being well informed is worth the extra effort
to be informed.
Adeline
