Join us for a free virtual event on Tuesday, May 9th at 6 p.m. EDT to support the best in environmental writing with an evening dedicated to celebrating the more-than-human world.
The event will include appearances by some of Orion’s favorite writers (with their furry, scaly, pawed, hoofed friends!) and Jane Goodall speaking about how she first came to feel connected to animals.
Readers like you make it possible for Orion to publish an ad-free, full-color magazine featuring writers and artists working at the intersection of storytelling, ecology, and justice.
Register for the free event, peruse the many items offered in the virtual auction, or make a donation to support the work today.

“I really enjoyed that hovering between understanding and not understanding, and being quite reflective of how we experience weather. Because if you explain snow to someone who’s never actually experienced snow, how much sense does it make?”
In June 2022, Artangel’s installation A Thousand Words for Weather opened at London’s Senate House Library. Created by author Jessica J. Lee and sound artist Claudia Molitor, the piece invites listeners to consider the ways in which our experiences of weather—and climate change—are at once intimate, shared, yet untranslatable. We’re pleased to share this conversation between the two of them reflecting on the project<https://orionmagazine.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a20a057eb8ad01dda717c6405&id=d12e50a361&e=3e64f2a21a>.

“Should there be a new language for this off-kilter world? When mackerel, the traditional catch of West African and Spanish fishers, show up in Iceland, are they still mackerel? Are pelicans that glide over the Schuylkill River, at least five degrees north of their historical habitat, still pelicans, or must we translate them?”
Anna Badkhen questions the known inadequacy, relative stasis, and something like transplanted or transposed understanding of language in a world that is spinning out of balance<https://orionmagazine.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a20a057eb8ad01dda717c6405&id=795658f272&e=3e64f2a21a>.

Spring is here. Who else is thinking about seeds?
One of the auction items in our silent auction is an hour (via Zoom) with Sefra Alexandra - The Seed Huntress - to learn about her work weaving together a native seed supply chain in the Northeast U.S., an endeavor that makes it possible to put the right plants in the right place.
The call will focus on ways to ecologically restore the wild corridors of your surrounding lands, including strategies that have been created to collect wild seeds, teach farmers how to grow special crops of native seed, and how to implement these seeds to restore lands that feed local pollinators.
