Green Sanctuary Folks:
I saw on WTAP-TV last evening that the application for the Arrowhead #2
injection well was approved by ODNR. This is not a surprise but still a
disappointment. This is glaring testimony to the fact that ODNR procedures
for reviewing such applications take no account of objections and concerns
raised by local residents who can be impacted by these injection wells.
Many of you heard these concerns at the June 2 meeting and at the meeting
last month in Reno on the issue of injection wells.
In the WTAP report a hydrogeologist, Linda Aller, who consults with the
Little Hocking Water Department noted that these injection wells pose a
risk to water aquifers because excessive brine waste can disturb abandoned
oil wells and thereby contaminate water aquifers. Many people think this is
what happened at Veto Lake in summer 2021 when raw petroleum appeared on
the lake--excessive brine waste disturbed an old well beneath the lake,
I have written to County Commissioner, Charlie Schilling, about the
connection between the need to plug old oil wells and injection wells.
There are federal funds available for plugging abandoned oil wells, which
have now been sent to the states for distribution to specific projects.
Commissioner Schilling has noted the need to plug old oil wells, but he
does not seem to move on the issue.
An op ed that I wrote on the topic of plugging abandoned old oil wells
appeared in the Parkersburg News & Sentinel two weeks ago (attached).
There should now be momentum to move on this matter.
Do any of you know individuals who can develop a plan for plugging old
oil wells in the area?
