FYI. I will be writing to officials in opposition to the proposed Belmont County cracker plant today. I hope you will consider doing so, too, by Wednesday. —dawn

> Hello members and supporters of CORR,
>
> As we are all weathering the winter storm and (hopefully) enjoying the snow, we ask that you take a couple actions to help protect the Ohio River today. The PTT Global Chemical ethane cracker/plastics plant proposed for Belmont County, OH (just 5 miles south of Shadyside) is still on indefinite hold. They still have not announced a Final Investment Decision, and have been stringing along residents and decision makers for far too long - almost 7 years. Despite the fact that the future is still uncertain for this major polluting facility, they still applied to renew their water pollution discharge permit with the state of Ohio - a move that does not necessarily indicate the project is moving forward.
>
> We need you to take action today to help us tell the state of Ohio that enough is enough.
>
> The Ohio River serves as a drinking water source for 5 million people with 23 water supply intakes located downstream from the proposed facility, including the drinking water intake for the city of Cincinnati. The closest water supply intake to the site of the proposed PTTGCA facility is in Sistersville, WV only approximately 30 river miles downstream. Recent research has found that existing petrochemical facilities are already permitted to pollute 500,000 pounds of toxic discharge into the Ohio River. The PTTGCA plant would further exacerbate this problem. The Ohio EPA did not do an antidegradation review before issuing the permit the first time - something they should have done to see how the extra load of toxins would impact the River.
>
> Additionally, the Ohio EPA put out the public notice for this water discharge permit renewal on December 20th - during the holidays - a time when people are not paying attention to these kinds of things, therefor we also need to ask for an extension to the comment period and for a public hearing.

> We will keep you updated as this situation evolves. We will have an update regarding the facility's air pollution permit - the other permit that they need to operate, but which expires in February, and the overall status of the project next month, so stay tuned. We will likely need your help at that point if the project finally dies.

> You've probably read about the Austin Master facility in Martins Ferry that takes in and processes radioactive waste from the oil and gas industry - the facility that operates on top of the drinking water aquifer for over 10 thousand people. We need your help in our campaign to keep our drinking water safe. We've made a LOT of progress so far, but the saga continues and is far from over.

> Attend the virtual Zoom meeting TODAY, Monday Jan. 17th at 6:00 pm. We will play a video presentation so you have all of the background info and threats the facility poses. We will have a Q&A session with Chief Silverio Caggiano after the video. He dealt with the Austin Master company in Youngstown before they quickly decided to move to Ferry after he started asking questions.

See you tonight at 6pm! (If for some reason the meeting is cancelled due to a power outage, we will reschedule it and will send out an email alert with the rescheduled date and time.)

> It was because of CORR (our group) that the US EPA is now investigating this site. The current owners of the property, 4K Industrial, LLC, purchased the property out of an auction after the old Wheeling-Pitt Steel went bankrupt. There is known contamination of hexavalent chromium (the Erin Brockovich movie chemical) in the groundwater in the area. The EPA has known about it since 2008, and they never did enough to monitor the site. This is why community organizing and advocacy matters. See this letter <https://u1584542.ct.sendgrid.net/ss/c/BqA3LhzOFl92KwaVoz69N4R3VxGtnkgDkg38jA055Z2imqEosHMcpNFmqCOZ3jRZMCLb3m1_GlMfZY4MsZXXGCJevCc75UD4Z6xrRBHsMhz5-W0tEnNPUhgKcn_AIX9UjLkEM2dnFJwLXqvQniuy4vpa__h9KYe7pffs4fyJwQrdkHnWEm4Hq-uOlV20lRZ7t0m2NiW2bY_-9YJveJlYfEzCQitlntWlaI1Z0czvjKGRj6QNz3U8nq9-ZS6DbKq3agnLmMHww1lL10-tQufclgUAUhwsJb6pxWJo2QJqaRfk2CrTV0ItpFDvVRZZrrci8PJSCT5k5foHKsB4yfyO2eG1Ci7n9TLAOTKK_V5nD6gNsATEF0oZf0_ytDA-k20h9RjY1VrihXUYs3rqYzKhNwoE_CwZTZ1-UYJbKNy-BzR7k4C_1WY-ERU_jgkEcUon/3is/WaVDnNWkQ1Sr5bQdmDhUpA/h3/6JdQAbTblenJ63uhHlrg1xByTKaSRYwDrbauBTLWJm4> that US EPA sent to the company requesting information. This is great news, as it means that communities like ours are being tended to.

> The Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources (ODNR) will hold a virtual meeting with residents due to our advocacy efforts and attention being forced upon these facilities. That meeting is this Wednesday, Jan. 19th at 1:00pm. If you want to attend that meeting email beverly at concernedohioriverresidents.org <mailto:beverly at concernedohioriverresidents.org> and we will send you the invitation to attend. This is where we can let the ODNR know that we are not happy with 1.) the fact that they permitted a radioactive waste handler on top of a drinking water source in the first place, and 2.) ask them questions about how they plan to protect us moving forward. See this exhaustive list <https://u1584542.ct.sendgrid.net/ss/c/BqA3LhzOFl92KwaVoz69N4R3VxGtnkgDkg38jA055Z1aj4luzNhaaDsjpRwXd0VluTB2i3QSMlHiJ1WxUg128JVWnucLJZp9R9rzDgONXb5Ca1azHNCriWrbXSFL_e1QcIOgUOBuIWEqU0pIJsg85sCDRU5EDUib79VHQRRGp3MzoLqZ1WgH47hcqbAVeKT7rpwJhls8CwR_a6y9pvue1HCH8zFn6QvPYwcusW6gG8GOtgbaSWm7bL4xhpztjbhpWh1ZCG1UfbuPtFLaDXv_LwNck256N1iRuvhRIsxvv0r2QPqu6Wo0OGCeRNjpgk9EvLLv8jtXserCuF9d89t6cWBlh2-oFaaSvxXkHo4mdbg7uenC8JgX60PGMRKI0ubnchiPOqDhJeAUZXM6xL98egMXb7akYTXaPlmNv85Upt_qFKokcDD86xj7JVf8KxoTAkHCbTzjbUXMVbiEOpY_ur96x4afeHDiA2DkdHvjnjo/3is/WaVDnNWkQ1Sr5bQdmDhUpA/h4/2jahWWpbflDagNz02mjxDFNgyvKWhaDCDNCoRVdKmag> of comments, facts, and questions that CORR sent ODNR during their rule making process for these waste facilities.

> Martins Ferry city administration say they want to protect their water, but they are not doing enough. They need us to push them to take the strongest stance possible in this situation. They need to hear from people like you. They have an ordinance that was designed to protect the drinking water, however it hasn't been enforced. The city has not been keeping close tabs on the area. They weren't aware of the hexavalent chromium contamination on the site from the old steel mill, and they weren't aware of the true threats of the current waste facilities that operate just 2,500 ft from the high school football field and atop the aquifer. The city needs to hear from us if we want the most protections. Call Mayor John Davies at ‪(304) 215-0042‬. Ask him to enforce the Source Water Protection Ordinance. Again, please register for the meeting tonight at 6pm to learn more and to see how you can get plugged in!
