So just what happened in 2022?

New Year’s Greetings!

This has been a busy year at Blue Rock Station (seems we say that each year).

Nearly 400 visitors walked down the lane - including students from Africa, China and across the US. Four summer interns and lots of volunteers put their own mark on the center through their hard work and inspiration.

Goat Stock was marvelous with Naomi Schalle (intern 2016) providing the final clue to find the antique treasure chest. Live music, skipping rope contests, wearing silly hats for the photo booth, and the ever-popular tie dye station helped to cap off two July days that seemed to leave everyone a little happier for the rest of the year.

Our Advisory Board met during July’s Goat Stock event. Their recommendations included hiring a part time assistant and pursuit of the non-profit status. A short discussion was held with an attorney and the plan is to meet with him in early 2023 to begin the process of obtaining a 501 (c) (3) tax status.
Eduardo Sandoval (intern 2016) put in some long hard hours over several weekends installing electricity in various locations around the farm. Many thanks for the expertise and contribution.

The food forest project (re-claimed pasture, high tunnel and main forest) has benefited from persistent care and the award of a grant from the Ohio University Voinovich Center. Everything is mulched and ready for spring as well. Many thanks to Chad Cully for his contributions and mentoring.

In November we purchased a folk Victorian house located within walking distance of downtown Marietta Ohio with the goal to move the solar installer education portion of Blue Rock Station to an area where broadband is reliable. The space provides a classroom for 16 students, offices and sleeping quarters.

The solar installer certification labs and testing will take place not only in Marietta, but we have scheduled classes at Zane State College, Oberlin College, the University of Dayton, and Hiram College during 2023.

The Yule party was great fun with a house full of former interns and students - exchanging white elephant gifts, and playing cut-throat charades.

So what's in store for 2023?

In February, results of grant applications to the American Farmland Trust and SARE will be awarded (fingers crossed). Our hope is that these grants will provide partial funding for attorney fees for succession/non-profit planning, and salaries for a food forest assistant.

Dalia Fabs-Soto (intern 2022) is returning to Blue Rock Station and will be with us from February to May to assist with the food forest - including helping to coordinate education days and the planting of 270 new plants using the Akira Miyawaki method of re-wilding and community building.

Goats are due to kid beginning February 6th week. Kidding season will last through March 10th.So once again this year the fields will be filled with bouncing baby goats.

The landscape at the new offices in Marietta will begin to be converted (2023) to an urban food forest with Elyse Perruchon (intern 2007, 2012), owner of Leaf and Lily Gardens (https://www.leafandlilygardens.com/about) and a professional garden designer providing a plan that will create an urban forest garden on the site. Not only do we hope to provide a living laboratory - but it will serve as an outdoor classroom for workshops and tours.

We also hope to add a solar array on the site in early 2023.
