Hello, all,

Updates on our CITF grant project:

  * The Lock One Park (where our solar charging bench is likely to be located) subcommittees have started meeting; Dave Ballantyne and I were part of a meeting on Tuesday, which the mayor attended. Spencer Kimball of Pickering hopes to have a couple of preliminary designs for people to review in the not-too-distant future. (Whether the city will have money to carry out the plans is another question.)
  *
  * The newly-installed pollinator plantings seem to be doing well. The two arrowwood viburnums are about to be in full bloom and worth a look. However, the site has needed watering because of the hot, dry weather. Rain is possible in the forecast this week, but this is Ohio, and one never knows. I have been going over every couple of days and gave everything a good soaking this morning but would welcome assistance. We have a hose (stored at the home of wonderful Fort Street neighbors) and water, so if you are able to help, I can show you where the hose is stashed and how to access the water.
  *
  * The Johnson grass and other undesirables are returning, so a weeding party would be a useful thing. Next Saturday, May 29, is the city cleanup day and perhaps a good time to pull up some less-than-lovely plants.
  *
  * The site is experiencing some erosion because of the exposed soil from the plants we removed. I added several bags of mulch a few days ago, but if anyone has a truck and some available time, Greenleaf's compost farm has free mulch. There is also a largish pile of it under the Washington Street bridge.

As our plants mature, they will start to fill in the space and choke out the nasties. Unfortunately, the first year or two of a new habitat requires human oversight. Thanks, everyone, for all you have done.

Rebecca
