Rebecca,

Here's another option, which may not appeal to yo or others, having put so much work into the current set up:

In the ILR Gardening class I just took, the OSU Extension Agent recommended doing solarization when the sun is highest and the ground warmest (June, July, August). Those would also be times when winds are less frequent and the air more calm. The process would work quite quickly during one of those months. We'd have to pull up some weeds before then, but that seems to be less onerous than the constant pinning, re-pinning, slipping and sliding on the plastic that we're doing now.

I am willing to help with the bamboo effort if you want to move ahead with that option. .

I found lots and lots of pins on the periphery of the plastic, and used them at the worst spots. We’ll almost need to scan the area for stray pins to prevent them from being run over by a lawn mower! As I left it today around 2, most of the hillside was covered, but if there are strong winds, it’s probably not going to hold. Bummer.
