# # [Blue Rock Station] # [Annie and Norman] A summer of progress... As the summer melts to an end... the garden is finally producing with all of the rain we have had in the past few weeks. The Happy Nest is looking mighty fine in it's new spot. The Tiny House is a work in progress. The high tunnel is ready to have a few tires filled with compost and plants. Our Food Forest Project experiment, with a more controlled growing pattern is about to begin. The online/hybrid solar installer certification class is starting a new instructor-led class this week with in person hands-on labs and testing (October 9th and 10th). There are still spots for University of Dayton and non-university students. COVID is beginning to influence our work and movements again this fall. Masks are back on the agenda, and the University of Dayton Buffalo Gals' classes are postponed until next spring. In happy and surprising news - Domesticshelters.org sent me a medal to honor my lifetime achievements with my work with women and social justice. I cried when I found out, and then cried again when the medal arrived. I've kept my promise to myself that I would leave this world a better place for women and their families, but I never expected to get a medal for it. And on October 30th we'll host the first official Blue Rock Station Advisory Board meeting (on Zoom) with Ian McSweeney from the Agrarian Trust. The goal is to begin to explore succession planning since someday Blue Rock Station and Warmke Farm will pass on to other folks (no one does anything forever). As luck would have it, the morning we were leaving to have four days of planning and a little bit of a break from summer interns I slipped and broke a bone in my foot. The pain and hobbling around has not been fun, but thank goodness for arnica gel. The injury has forced me to mostly stay sitting down, and even read a book. Blessings come in many forms. Now if those blessings could include someone to haul compost and plant tire beds. Lately this has created a few conversations between us, and between us and the summer interns. If being a “hippie” is about rejecting the dominant culture, then we guess I qualify. The problem happens to be that I lived through the “hippie” days and I just can't identify with the label. I couldn't then and I can't now.
