The Silent Rebellous Act of Voting  

Seems the current election has been going on for about four years, but it will soon (hopefully) come to an end.  In celebration of that fact, I thought it would be fun to share a story or two about the joy of voting.

>From the time our granddaughter was a small child we drug her along to the polling station at the tiny city hall near where we lived in rural Florida. She attended rallies, met Joe Biden when he ran for vice-president, and as a teenager did data entry for the Democrats when Obama ran.

It was our goal that she share our passion for the political process and for voting. My father, a WWII Navy veteran, made it clear to us as children that voting was sacred and that we must always show up whether we were Republican, or God forbid, a Democrat.

Jay influenced me as well. He was as conservative a liberal as you could ever meet. He liked to say he voted for the person, not the party - but could never remember who that person was. He does remember that until Obama he hadn't voted for one presidential candidate that actually won.

Jay was a bit of a rebel, registering to vote Republican in the Ohio primary when we moved back to Ohio – he did that so he could show up at the Republican Party's county fair tent to proudly announce, “I'm a Republican and I don't agree with anything you are saying.” That made everybody look up as he continued to share his reasoning. It's a wonder he didn't get thrown out of the tent by the seat of his pants.

Right now over 6 million people have voted early by mail or standing in line – sometimes a quarter of a mile long. Over 70 times as many as had voted early at the same ponit in the process in 2016.

2020 has been a strange and difficult year for all.  It is oddly comforting to me that we can still make our voices heard through the ballot box...the one place we can wage a peaceful war.

So Where is the Silver Lining?  

It seems that we had forgotten how fun it is to just go for a ride and have a picnic.

When we lived in Europe, we took long drives, explored, and had picnics every possible day we could.

This fall we've visited several parks and green spaces that we'd never seen before. We've discovered a really upscale grocery store in Cambridge Ohio (shocking to me), and found that Norman loves to ride along and patiently wait while we eat our food.

I think Jay decided enough was enough when two mornings in a row at our morning briefing I started crying as we looked at the online news.

His plan is to just watch Brooks and Shields on PBS on Friday evening to find out (rationally) what has been happening.
