[Green] Time to Hunker Down - the News from Blue Rock Station (November 2020)

Where is that warm, snuggy place?
We are worn out.
I have to admit that both Jay and I are political junkies. So the past few months have been filled with more of their share of emotional ups and downs. But our window to the world involves watching a computer screen as it buffers and buffers and buffers.
Periodically we get 15 seconds of updates, warning us (alternately) that the world is about to end or we have all been saved.
As the election hype faded, updates concerning the Corona virus again took center stage. And like many, we began to think about how we are going to get through the winter with dreary cold days and no visitors.
We established a daily routine back in March. I moved my office to the Peace Porch so I could have a space to be alone to work or rest. That's made a huge difference in my outlook and attitude.
In the animal world it's called “a snuggy retreat”. In my office I have snacks, a tea kettle, and a marvelous cot covered in the quilt a friend made for me. I can look out into the goat pasture on one side and a wooded valley on the other. My dogs sleep around me on the floor.
A routine is helpful, but the "social distancing" can be wearing. I find that I need to figure out how to mimic the normal social get togethers that we have for the holidays. Those times of friendship and creating new stories are often the energy that gets us through the winter but still feeling reasonably sane.
On Thanksgiving and Christmas Days we will host a Zoom call with friends. For our “adopted” son's birthday I have mailed presents to be opened on a Skype call. Jay and I plan to practice for a planned outdoor kitchen by cooking soup over an outdoor fire - and maybe look at the stars (if the clouds and temperature cooperate).
Lately the world seems, as they say, "as serious as a heart attack." Sometimes I just need a warm security blanket and a cup of tea to see me through.

So Where is the Silver Lining?
Norman has finally discovered his confidence around Jay. Jay deserves a lot of credit though.
Jay's never been a dog person. I am sure he has hardly ever touched the other two dogs, and only spoken to them to remind them that they are spoiled sociopaths.
With Norman, however, he offers praise, tummy rubs, back massages and a kind voice. This has taken Norman full circle - from being terrified of Jay's every movement, to seeking his attention. This might be a “miracle” on both their parts.
We enjoy hearing your silver lining stories...they always bring a smile. NOTE: Norman is not injured. He licked the pink paint can lid and then his paws.

A Note from Jay and Me:
The days are shorter as we approach the winter solstice. It seems that the day comes to an end before it has begun.
Two phrases keep coming to my mind.
A friend of mine was fond of saying "This too shall pass" whenever faced with a trying situation. We can almost see the "end of the tunnel" as of this week.
And as Jay and I discuss potential 2021 plans, one or the other often remarks, "Is this an unnecessary risk?"
And so, once again, Mother Nature is telling us, perhaps forcing us, to hunker down - catch our breath - and wait for Spring. We don't need to be told twice.
