Per George’s request, last night I wrote to Adam Schroeder of the Ohio DNR, seeking information about injection wells in Washington County. He responded within 24 hours. Here’s what he said. Note the attachments. I regret that I did not ask for the locations of the 15 wells.

Good afternoon Ms. Hewitt,

Thank you for your email and for contacting the Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management.

Washington County has 15 active injection wells. Those wells injected 7,441,330 barrels in 2019. Trumbull County has the most active injection wells in the state with 19. The Division does not keep records of West Virginia or Pennsylvania.

Section 1509.021 <http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/1509.021> (L) of the Ohio Revised Code addresses well spacing. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is the regulator of township and municipal water supplies.

Please see below for the well and depth:

The Division does not speculate as to the capacity of these wells.

Please find the requested inspection reports attached to this email. I have attached brine disposal spreadsheets dating back to 2012 to this email.

Again, thank you for contacting the Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management.

Stay safe.

Thank you,

Subject: Public Records Request re injection wells in Washington County

Dear Mr. Schroeder:

As a resident of Marietta, I am deeply concerned about injection wells here in Washington County. This letter is a Public Records Request under ORC 149.43 regarding injection wells near where I live:

1. How many injection wells are there in Washington County? It is my understanding that there are more injection wells in this one county than in the entire states of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Is that true? Is it true that there are more injection wells in Washington County than in any other county in Ohio?

2. How close are injection wells to township and municipal water supplies in Washington County?

 3. How many barrels of brine waste were injected in these wells in the past five years?

 4. What is the estimated capacity of those wells?

 5. How deep are the injection wells in Washington County?

  6. I request copies of the inspection reports of the injection wells in Washington County for the past five years.

7. It is my understanding that Ohio gets $.05/barrel for brine originating in Ohio, and $.20/barrel from waste from out of state. Is that accurate? How much total revenue did the State of Ohio earn in the past five years from injection well fees, and can this revenue be broken down by state source?

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Dawn Hewitt
