Norman arrives at Blue Rock Station
Over the last seven years there has been a big hole in my heart and I've never really stopped looking for a replacement livestock guardian dog (LGD) for Rosie, who died all those years ago.
Last week a Facebook news feed told me that a LGD was looking for us. It turns out he needed rescued (we would be his third owner in nine days). He was eight months old and no one had given him a name.
There were loads of things to overcome to make it possible for him to come here, starting with Jay and me agreeing that now was the time. When Jay agreed without much of a fuss - I thought I was hearing things.
But Norman (as we decided must be his name) lived about six hours away. We met about half way for the transfer - and the three and half hours trip back was easier than I had feared. He is a big nervous puppy - but each time I gave him a firm "No!" he laid down and behaved, until he forgot he was behaving and we did it all over again.
So now he's learning English and French commands, how not to grab my arm when I leave him for the night, and that his home is up at the barn. He is too young to “guard” yet, so he is learning manners and figuring out how his DNA can drive him to be a good livestock guardian dog. I'll keep you posted.

This week's silver lining is Norman.
It is amazing that a 125 lb. great Pyrenees anatolian mixed breed dog could bring so much pleasure. He has such a joy for life, and is a big fluffy love bunny. Because of the pandemic, we are hunkered down for the foreseeable future, so I'm here 24/7 for the duration. That gives me an opportunity for Norman to do chores with me every morning and then sleep in the doorway, as I work, of my Peace Porch office. He is providing added richness to my life.

There's nothing like a good flattened curve to make life “real”.
While we do miss our loved ones visiting, and definitely events like our Goat Stock Annual Intern Reunion, we can't help feeling grateful everyday for our time together eating at the Overlook, or our morning briefings that end with the joke of the day (do you have a good one to send our way?).
There is an old curse that says, "May you live in interesting times." Well I guess that one can be checked off our collective list.
