Dogs making Snow Angels...
As I write this note, the view from my office window is of the pasture and woodland covered with ice and the first snow of winter.
Norman thinks this snow is from heaven...something to eat, something to push about with his nose. He loves throwing his body into the air and onto his back, making snow dog angels.
On the other hand, I already have visions of spring starting with the planning for the spring food forest garden.
A group out of Portugal that is interested in creating a global network of food forest gardens has been in touch which led to a longer call with Chad Cully, our agroforestry intern. He has already staked out the field where the garden will emerge - and has sketched and planned and the seedlings are ready to be planted.
It's exciting to think about creating a project that we hope will bring urban/suburban folks together with rural people to learn how to grow food forests on small city or large woodland lots. The project is starting from scratch and will be located in the farthest west one-quarter acre field. More on this project later.

So Where is the Silver Lining?
Covid19 has created an unexpected adjustment in life...learning to take care of myself and living more securely in the moment.
It was no surprise to me that much of my daily life is focused on others – critters, interns, and consulting with folks. Knowing this did not make my struggles any easier.
My first act to care for "me" was to move my office to the Peace Porch. Over time I decorated it to feel "cozy" with items that had been in storage for too many years - and then started “walking” to work every day (the Peace Porch is about 400 yard from the house).
Now that winter is setting in, I can see that this was the right decision. Even though the office seems to stay at around 60°F (or less), I don't seem to find it uncomfortable. I wrap up in a beautiful shawl that I knitted in the 1970's and cover up in a green and yellow lap robe I made for my grandmother, plus put on some fingerless gloves. Somehow it all works.
We enjoy hearing your silver lining stories...no two are the same which is the reason they bring a smile.

Now that the election is finally over, we are feeling a little more hopeful about life in general.
Perhaps nothing has actually changed, but some of the background noise has quieted - like the silence after a dog stops barking.
We are heading into our Thanks for Nothing season with an abundance of love, food and meaningful work. The new year offers loads of opportunity and we think we're resilient enough to grab some of it by the horns - focusing on our online solar classes, and the new forest food gardens.
