[Green] Education Evolves - the News from Blue Rock Station (August 2020)

The plot thickens...  

In case you aren't aware, there are secret back rooms around the globe plotting a revolution in learning.

One of these subversive backrooms is located right here at Blue Rock Station. 

We have had to look hard at how people learn and teach - as traditional good old face-to-face get togethers just ain't gonna happen for a while.

Our response has been to create virtual tours and weekly Solar Noon Tuesdays Zoom call-ins.  We have experiemented with student-run "free schools" that focus on life skills.  We have posted podcasts and videos.  We have created innovative technical courses that integrate audio, video, labs and ... well, you get the point. 

One thing is certain, the "traditional" education system will not return to its old normal when all the dust settles from the current disruptions.  And it is about time.

The University of Dayton is sponsoring a complete and comprehensive online work-at-your-own pace course designed to help you understand how to design and install residential solar (PV) systems.

We've been on quite a journey since the pandemic reared its ugly head back in March.

After a lot of long hours, hard work and a few choice words directed at technology (and lack of broadband) - we have finally begun to see new students and instructors signing up for our solar installer classes (from around the globe).

It's been rewarding to work with schools like the University of Dayton to offer our training (starts September 1 for six weeks online) as a way for them to find new value-added online alternatives to their existing curriculum. Plus we even have plans (fingers crossed) to offer the Bodacious Woman event that includes how to build a solar generator for women in engineering.

So forward we go into the cyber wilderness, waiting to see what adventures online training bring to our work.

A Note from Jay and Me:  

It's been pretty exciting to have the phone ring or read emails from folks asking to purchase our textbooks or sign up for an online class.

We've been lucky to receive a generous Resiliency Grant through Rural Action to help us do some advertising beyond our normal “organic” marketing strategies.
