How could I forget to mention Doris Gracey? She was amazing.

Wow- this list is great and so wonderful to remember - what a talented group we have! and how good to try to get a perspective.
I'm remembering the series of classes to learn how to reduce your carbon footprint. I took the one taught by Nina and Mark Redd, but there was another class taught the year or two before that- I know the Tings were involved, but not sure who else was teaching or part of that.

Also- the work of members to create the great community gardens. or have you already mentioned that?

Missing "Dr. Worm" now too.. and the wonderful work he used to do and the business he had created... enjoyed his presentations as part of the gardening series, but realize he wasn't a UU.

I'm remembering the 1970s when I lived on Fourth Street- and Ms.Doris Gracey- who had the natural vegetation in her front yard.(others seemed to call them "weeds"). seems to be a tradition I'm continuing- loving the violets and dandelions, and other naturally growing plants growing around my home! I do mow but make sure i get the naturals to bloom their fullest first!

i'm sure you've already noted Andrew Clovis's work with Master Gardners.. and yes - love that plant sale.

Did i mention, Dawn's worms- and those that take the compost and feed them to their home "creatures".
And the wonderful eggs available to us all for a small donation.. And the GREAT recycling.. and the special day to collect those items we need to recycle.

I'm also appreciating those with other talents, like knitting ( I'm thinking of Else Lamba) who use their energies and talents to knit incredible hats and scarfs and give them to whomever seemed to need one.. Perhaps that's not directly earth day- but makes for a more loving world.
don't we have some members who grow herbs or make soaps, etc from "the Earth".

The beautiful flowers and plants grown .. by Chris and Al

I've been fortunate to be one of those artists who has had the opportunity to transform the trunk of our native white oak tree in to traditional baskets.. and there are so many other artists who are connected with UU who draw inspiration or vision from Nature and we see it reflected in their work or their poetry.

Perhaps I can find a photo to share, if you are sharing images.
Cindy

How about adding:

Annie and Jay Warmke with the UU Green Sanctuary Committee hosting solar installer classes to bring job training to the MOV, and to raise money for FUUSM

I think the yard and plant sale need recognition for their promotion of re-use and re-purposing plus encouraging growing food and plants.

Selling fair trade coffee, etc.

Earth Day Marietta activities over the years

National Solar Energy Day tour of the church

Promoting reusable water bottles

Development of the Sustainable Marietta Forum and survey to bring awareness of the economics of sustainable practices

Hello, all,

I am finalizing the talk for Sunday's Earth Day service, part of which will be information on what FUUSM members and friends have done over the years to "cherish the universe and its resources." Things I am remembering include

  * Elin Jones, Caroline Putnam, and Karen Barry's involvement in outdoor education for many years
  * Brad Bond and the Putnams and the founding of the Marietta Recycling Center (and the ongoing volunteer efforts of many congregants)
  * Involvement of many FUUSM folks in the work of Friends of Lower Muskingum River, development of the Kroger Wetland, and the river trail
  * Mike Bailey's tireless efforts to get Green Sanctuary work started
  * Dave Ballantyne's work with the city on solar issues
  * Roger Kalter's tree plantings over the years
  * George Banziger and Cindy Brown (who am I forgetting) and the Devola Multi-Use Trail linking to the Broughton Refuge
  *   Our solar panels!
  * Involvement of church members in MOVCA, CCL, and ARECC
  * Efforts of so many to live "greener" every day

What can we add to the list?

Rebecca
