Subject: Wayne Forest Action
Hello all, the second on-line auction of Wayne National Forest land for fracking is scheduled for this Thursday March 23rd. It is for 1,600 acres and we need your voice to help stop it!!!!!
It has been confirmed that the United States Forest Service (USFS) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) have approved up to 40,000 acres of forest land, directly from the Marietta unit of Wayne, for fracking!
If you want to continue using the Wayne then we need to work together to stop this now!
There is a local Keep Wayne Wild group that has formed in Marietta. If you are interested in volunteering with this group, please let me know and I will put you in contact with the organizer.
If you are not able to volunteer but can still make a phone call…please read below!
• Call Regional Forester Kathleen Atkinson (414-297-3765) and request that she WITHDRAW the parcels from the March 23rd auction. She lives in Milwaukee but she is in charge of the Wayne and of the decision to allow it to be fracked. They will probably direct you to a comment line where they say they will only listen if you have “new information” but please leave a message anyway. Please also request that she authorize a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) of fracking impacts; this has not been done! Such a study requires evaluation of up-to-date science and a meaningful public input process.
For Ohio residents, please also call:
• Senator Sherrod Brown (202-224-2315), press #3 to speak to a real person, and request that he intervene. Senator Brown has stated publicly<http://www.acfan.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/051916_BROWN_1_RADIO.mp3> that the decision to frack public lands must be evaluated “carefully,” “responsibly, and with respect for the land and local tourism.” Since the USFS has NEVER EVALUATED fracking impacts on the Forest, let alone taken formal public input, this sale is illegal, irresponsible, and must be cancelled. Please ask him to help pressure Kathleen to pull the parcels and authorize a full EIS.
• Senator Rob Portman (614-469-6774). Request the same.
• Governor John Kasich (614-466-3555) His record on fracking is not great since he allows fracking waste from other states to be injected in Ohio. However, he recently voted to allow renewable energy growth to continue in Ohio and “liked” our Keep Wayne Wild page. Perhaps he would be able to help in some way if he is sympathetic to our forest land being preserved.
Thank you!!!
