Keep It Cool campaign fights energy waste

For years, Callie Hancock (at left), a CCL leader in Princeton, N.J., had
been frustrated by local stores propping their doors open in the summer,
wasting energy and “air conditioning the universe.”

She wanted to do something to curb the practice, but she was not successful
in engaging the store staff. “Thanks to CCL, I can talk to a member of
Congress about climate change, but it was much more awkward talking to
store managers – they are not empowered,” said Callie. She even wrote
letters to stores but received no response.

So Callie was thrilled to hear Sandy Reisky

call earlier this year about their upcoming Keep It Cool

Keep It Cool is mobilizing people around the country to encourage stores to
close their doors and stop wasting energy.

“I couldn’t wait for the campaign to start this summer,” said Callie.
Participating is easy and anonymous. Just use Facebook Messenger to contact
Gen 180 and drop a pin on a map that tracks stores identified with doors
open or closed. Gen 180 then recognizes shops that “Keep It Cool” with
closed doors and reaches out to educate retailers who allow energy to
escape through open doors.

Callie has used Keep It Cool to tag stores in Princeton. “I have found it
pretty intuitive,” she said. “In the last couple of weeks since I started
using it, I see more closed doors in stores that used to be offenders. I
feel more optimistic.”
