Hi Green Sanctuary friends,

I just learned something that I thought you'd like to know. Do you love
chocolate as much as I do? I've just learned that much of the chocolate
available to us is possible because of slave labor. My Quaker friend,
Jane Hearne, recently became aware of this through the work of her
daughter, Carrie, who lives on the west coast and works with a delivery
business that uses bicycles and is concerned about the companies they
support!

Below is Jane Hearne's email to me, which she encourages us to share :

Here is a link to one of the chocolate / child labor & slavery articles I
read. Read and share with others about the power of even just our Halloween
candy purchases:

chocolate-brands-that-exploit-child-slaves/

Also see: tonyschocolonely.com <http://tonyschocolonely.com/>. (one of the
companies Carrie works with), and...

This last link leads to the article "Child labor and slavery in the
chocolate industry".

.......

The information and images in that last article are REALLY worth reading!

It was interesting to me to learn more about the Food Empowerment
Project and I found their work very significant. From that last article,
which is so moving and informative. there is a link to the current listing
of world-wide businesses marketing chocolate an their assessment of which
ones they can recommend and do not recommend.

Here is the mission of the Food Empowerment Project: copied from this site:

About F.E.P.
“As a vegetarian and someone who has dedicated my life to causes of
justice, I strongly support Food Empowerment Project’s efforts to connect
the issues of justice for farm workers, food, and animals, protecting the
environment and providing equal access to healthy foods.”
Dolores Huerta
Co-Founder, United Farm Workers
President, Dolores Huerta Foundation

Food Empowerment Project seeks to create a more just and sustainable world
by recognizing the power of one’s food choices. We encourage healthy food
choices that reflect a more compassionate society by spotlighting the abuse
of animals on farms, the depletion of natural resources, unfair working
conditions for produce workers, and the unavailability of healthy foods in
low-income areas.

By making informed choices, we can prevent injustices against animals,
people, and the environment. We also work to discourage negligent
corporations from pushing unhealthy foods into low-income areas and empower
people to make healthier choices by growing their own fruits and
vegetables. In all of our work, Food Empowerment Project seeks specifically
to empower those with the fewest resources.

Food Empowerment Project is a vegan <http://www.foodispower.org/veganism/>food
justice organization and a registered non-profit 501(c)(3) and was founded
in 2006 by lauren Ornelas. Learn more about the organization’s leadership
team <http://www.foodispower.org/f-e-p-s-board-and-advisors/>.

..

Thank you Green Sanctuary friends for making a difference locally and
helping us all know and learn more. I appreciate the work and friendships
and passions of this group.

Best wishes,

Cindy Taylor
