Dear FUUSM friends and family,
On Saturday from 1–5 p.m., if you are available and able, help is needed to plant several hundred native trees on Buckley Island—a great way to celebrate Earth Day weekend.
Extra help is needed. For the past 10 days or so, a crew of young, strong AmeriCorps volunteers had been taking on labor-intensive projects at the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge, and they were scheduled to work alongside local volunteers for Saturday’s tree planting. Unfortunately, they were all unexpectedly withdrawn from service yesterday and sent home. These are the young people who joined us for our Sustainable Supper last Friday, and they are now gone. They were supposed to be here through early May—working hard on many projects! (It’s outrageous and totally inefficient to have them withdrawn mid-project.) Anyway, if you can fill their boots on Saturday’s tree planting, it would be really helpful. Meet at the Williamstown boat launch, sign a waver, and then take a short boat ride to Buckley Island. No tools required, and even work gloves will be provided (but I’ll be bringing my own). Boots are recommended; it could be quite muddy. But it’ll be fun!
