Thank you! I did not know that. I have five feeders in different locations. Of course, I do not spend time observing how many hummers to each one.

Take the maximum number you see at any one time, and multiply by 7. That's how many hummingbirds are using your feeder(s).

This was determined by the amount of nectar consumed by captive hummingbirds, and by briefly capturing and visibly marking wild hummingbirds.

So, Dawn

How do you determine the maximum number of hummingbirds--the count of those at the feeder at the same time or the number of repeat individuals throughout the day?

Ha ha! Thanks for the report, Chris! You know, studies have been done that captured and marked hummingbirds (with a sharpie dot), weighed them, released them, calculated the amount of sugar-water gone through in a day, combined with how much sugar-water captive hummingbirds go through in a day, and come up with formula: Take the maximum number of hummingbirds you see at your feeder (so, either 4 or 6) and multiply it times 7 to get the actual number of individuals you are feeding at any time.

Julie has a maximum of four at her feeders, too. I still have zero, so I'm jealous of both of you!

Hi Dawn:
Last night, Sunday, I was out on the deck from about 8:30 - 9:30 pm. The hummers were busy at the feeder. I saw four of them fussing around and finally settled on the feeder together. They came and went. At one time when there were four of them at the feeder, I saw two more flying about. So, we have at least 6 hummers here. No doubt many more.

So you need to report to Julie Z. That all your hummers are here in Tyler Co. WV!

They must like my "cooking"!

Chris
