Prayers from Chautauqua's Interfaith Family
No. 12 • A Prayer for Memorial Day from a Retired Army Chaplain
ETERNAL ONE,
HOLY ONE,
MYSTERIOUS ONE,
PRESENT ONE,
ABSENT ONE,
COMING ONE,
REMEMBERING ONE,
WEEPING ONE,
RESTORING ONE …
GOD OF MANY NAMES THROUGH WHICH YOUR LOVE ENCOMPASSES ALL,
TO YOU, THIS DAY, WE OFFER THE MANY NAMES OF THOSE WE REMEMBER, AND IN SO DOING, REMIND OURSELVES THAT NOT ONE HAS BEEN LOST TO YOU. IN FAITH, IN HOPE, IN TRUST, WE DARE BELIEVE THAT, FROM THE BEGINNING, AS IT WILL BE TO THE END, YOUR HEART WELCOMES AND TAKES IN ALL.
EVEN AS WE ARE SADDENED BY THE DEATHS OF SO MANY FROM CONFLICT,
EVEN AS WE ARE SADDENED BY THE DEATHS OF SO MANY FROM DISEASE,
WE TRUST SUCH WAS NEITHER YOUR WILL NOR DESIRE, BUT THAT THE WELCOME WE ASCRIBE TO YOUR LOVE IS YOUR AIM FOR ALL CREATION.
EASE THE SADNESS IN OUR HEARTS THAT GRIEF, IN TIME, MAY BECOME THE JOY OF FAITH AND HOPE AND LOVE, AND IN OUR SURE CONFIDENCE THAT YOU ARE THE ONE OUR HEARTS DESIRE, CREATE IN US MINDS AND HEARTS AND ACTIONS THAT REFLECT YOUR AIM.
HEALING ONE,
MAKE US ONE WITH YOU AND ONE WITH ONE ANOTHER NOW AND FOREVER. AMEN.
—The Rev. J. Paul Womack

This is the 12th in a weekly series of Prayers from Chautauqua's Interfaith Family (previous prayers are archived here) as the world copes with the realities of the COVID-19 crisis. We are asking 2020 lecturers and chaplains, and other members of Chautauqua's interfaith family, to write a brief prayer or reflection from their own tradition, praying the way prayers are said in their faith tradition, as a reminder to each of us that though we use different names for God, worship with different words, and express our faith in multiple ways, we are drawn together by our common humanity, especially in these difficult times.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to take lives and affect every American (not to mention everyone around the world), we hope this prayer will be a blessing to you. Chautauqua’s Board of Trustees’ decision to hold its 147th Assembly online, rather than on our grounds, offers us an exciting opportunity to bring Chautauqua to an even broader range of people. We invite you to pray for the victims of the novel Coronavirus, for everyone affected by it, and for healthcare workers, first responders, and those who staff essential services for the public. And please, remember Chautauqua in your prayers as we begin this new and exciting chapter in our long and storied history, until we can meet again in our “Sacred Grove” by the lake.
Stay safe and healthy. We will see you soon for the 2020 Summer Assembly online!
