Dear FUUSM Members and Friends,
Last year, we were presented with the opportunity to serve an important community need by the director of the Life and Purpose Community Resource Center on Front Street. Thanksgiving Day is one of the few when the center is closed to its patrons, and she asked whether FUUSM would consider offering a meal and a warm place to enjoy it in its stead.
After soliciting input from the congregation and from Norwood Methodist Church, we decided to order 40 meals from Norwood, which we picked up late morning on Thanksgiving Day. We opened the doors of our fellowship hall from 11 am to 1:30 pm, and welcomed those who’d signed up through the Center to attend. It was all very easy, clean-up was minimal and the food was delicious. Even more importantly, those we served were very happy and grateful to be there, many taking a little food with them for later in the day. All leftovers were bagged up and taken by the director back to the Center.
Norwood Methodist Church serves over 600 meals every Thanksgiving, and relies on donations from other area churches to sustain this worthy endeavour. Last year, thanks to our loyal FUUSM members and friends, we were pleased to be able to present Norwood with a check for several hundred dollars following our request for contributions.
We realize our small congregation has been beset lately with extra requests for financial support, but we hope you’ll again consider honoring this one. Community outreach is an important way to acknowledge those in our area who have little to be grateful for, especially during the holidays. Recognizing their worth and dignity on Thanksgiving Day is a small, but significant, thing that we can do.
Please make checks payable to FUUSM, with a clear notation that they are intended for the NORWOOD THANKSGIVING fund. They may be delivered or mailed to Dawn Hewitt at the church office, and should be there by November 15. She will then write one check to Norwood.
Also, please feel free to join us on Thanksgiving morning for coffee and fellowship. Extra hands are always appreciated, and I think I can speak for all who helped that it was a gratifying experience. My daughter went with me last year and said it was the best Thanksgiving she’d had in a long time.
Thank you, and Blessings to All,
Nancy LeeShari Ballantyne
