Hi, FUUSM friends,

On Friday at 6 p.m. in the social hall, the Green Sanctuary Committee will host a Sustainable Supper (formerly known as a Just Dinner), and you’re invited! The point of this potluck is for us to put some thought into the choices we make regarding food. Where does it come from? How was it grown? Were all the workers involved compensated fairly? What was sprayed on these crops? Was it genetically modified? Were the animals treated well? What are the environmental impacts of the groceries in this bag?

As UUs, we’re not going to tell you what is or isn’t “sustainable.” Just like your theology, you have to figure it out for yourself, but we can give you food for thought! (Pun intended!) Some people might opt for a vegan or vegetarian dish to share. Or someone might make a dessert with the rhubarb that they grew last year and froze, or they might open a few jars of green beans they grew and canned. Not all the ingredients in every dishes will be local or organic or home-grow, and that’s fine. Eggs, dairy, and meaty dishes are fine, too—as long as you’ve put thought into how and where the animals were raised and slaughtered, and you deem it respectful and environmentally responsible. Sugar Butte Farms, near Lowell, for example, offers chicken, pork, and eggs at Marietta Farmers Market, and not only do they try to make sure that their animals have the best possible lives, they rotate them on pasture, with the intention of improving the soil by farming (regenerative agriculture). I don’t eat much meat, but when I do, I get it from Sugar Butte or Valley Ridge Farm (which uses regenerative agriculture to produce beef).

The important thing is that you think about what goes into your food, and whether it is good for the Earth and fair to all those who brought it to you—if even just for this one meal. At the Sustainable Supper on Friday, we will certainly share ideas for Earth-friendly eating. Sustainable Suppers are inspiring, and make it easier to eat righteously more often. Especially if you haven’t been to one before, I hope you will start thinking about it now, and prepare a dish to share that reflects your values. It’s fun to see what everyone comes up with! And you may be surprised how delicious sustainable food can be!!

Ten or so AmeriCorps volunteers who are working at the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge for a few weeks are likely to join us—but they aren’t expected to contribute to the potluck. So, if you come, please cook extra! And I hope you will come!

Dawn, for the Green Sanctuary Committee
